Just fitted new Groupset but am worried about the chain?

Postby davehmercer » Sat Nov 17, 2012 21:41 pm

I have just finished fitting a Campagolo Centaur Groupset (some second hand parts some new) and whilst fitting the new chain I found it was far too long after I fitted the quick link! I have shortened the chain (KMC) but had to remove a few links using my chain break tool, I am now a bit concerned that I may have caused damage to the pins whilst pushing them out and back in and am going out for a 50 mile club ride in the morning and I'm worried that my chain will fail!

Can someone advise me if I have anything to worry about or not?

Thanks

Dave

Take some pins with you. I done this last week l took a pin out then put a new one in the same hole, lucky for me done a 35mile ride, and on the last hill which takes me home(walking distance) the chain snapped.

i have now put a new chain on with the KMC link they are excellent, you have to ply pressure to the middle while pushing together easy once you do.

Get another KMC link to replace the dodgy link, no need to trash a brand new chain.

He's already trashed the chain. Just buy a new chain.

Take your chain tool with you, you can run it short if need be. If you got the pin back in straight it'll be fine.

Unless you're made of money, in which case go and buy a new one.

No he hasn't - he's trashed a pin and a quick link is a perfectly good replacement. The one issue is whether or not the OP can find the pin he pushed back.

Of course, you don't have this sort of trouble with 7 speed chains

I have checked the Chain a good few times and can't tell which one it was?

just keep the chain splitter and spare quicklink in your pocket,
if the pin is no good it will fail and you will be prepared.
if its all ok you wont need to use it..
but at least you will be ready either way

And strap a decent sized cushion to your top tube...

Removing a pin from a 10sp chain breaks the peening on the end of the pin. You often find a little ring of metal on the extractor pin when breaking the chain. Pushing a pin in again will never be as strong a fit and the fish plate can easily slip off. The only pins that can safely be used to join a 10sp chain are the Shimano ones. A KMC (or similar) quick link is far better.

Too many people here telling him to just ride it until/if the breaks which is not good advice. If the chain breaks whilst under immense pressure it could send your knees into the stem or bars as well as ejecting you from the bike, I have also seen broken chains go into the back wheel and cause lots of damage. For the price of a new chain it is not worth the risk.
