Advice please

Postby andrewclarke » Mon Nov 19, 2012 14:46 pm

Hi
I am looking to buy my 15 yr old son a new MTB for XMAS and he had picked out the Barracuda Obtuse. However when i visted my local bike shop to see if they sold them, he told me that he doesn't stock Barracuda anymore due to them going downhill and he recommended that we look for an alternative.
I am due to take my son to the shop this weekend to see if he likes any of the bikes he sells but in the meantime i would like to see if anyone can recommend a particular brand/model ?
We are looking to spend between £180 - £230
Grateful for any advice and also if anyone has any comments re the quality of Barracude bikes
Many thanks
Andrew

You are going to struggle at that price point to get anything useful for serious off road riding. What is he going to use it for (and what does he have now)?

Hi
He doesn't have a bike at the moment - out grew his last one some months ago and has been borrowing a mates bike.
He isn't looking to do any serious mountain biking - just a mixture of riding on the road, local dirt tracks and on grass up the playing field etc.
Perhaps a Mountain bike isn't the best choice then ? (just going by him selecting the Barracude model......)

That's a decent option, or if you can stretch a bit, the cheapest 'real' mountain bike, with decent gears, fork and brakes is probably

But doesn't fit with my technical description of decent forks. But not bad.
