Postby Akirasho » Tue Dec 04, 2012 13:34 pm

... just a few pics from our Saturday outing in the Cincinnati/northern Kentucky area in the US. Temps were cool to start but warmed up nicely for the first day in December!

Roads look pretty decent! You're enjoying temperatures in December that we would be happy with in Scotland in June!!

... course, the pendulum swings and today, a couple days later, we'll struggle to make 40...

Number 1. i'm jealous, nice road surface and no cars about and warm.
Did a quick 12 mile this morning and it was hovering around zero ( bloody cold ). Plenty of cars to keep me on my toes as well.

... we all know this won't last which is why we were keen to get out! On this same ride, I saw my first woolly worm of the year... according to lore, we're gonna have one helluva blow here...

Drab looking roads to cycle on tbh but lovely smooth tarmac and I like the Art Deco thingy! What is it - I presume a church of some sort?

... the roads vary both in condition and traffic... the perks of being on the other side of a major river in a major metro area...

The Art Deco Thingy is The Art Deco Thingy!!! Just kidding... it's the old Union Terminal train station in Cincinnati that is now a museum!

http://www.cincymuseum.org/

Our regular ride takes us 'neath the old station on our outbound.

That's stunning - absolutely fabulous; thanks for that link. Really interesting to read up on it. I did like this though from Wikipedia;
The renovations also allowed Amtrak to restore service to Union Terminal via the thrice-weekly Cardinal on July 29, 1991. Of the seven Ohio stations served by Amtrak, Cincinnati was the third busiest in FY2010, boarding or detraining an average of approximately 40 passengers daily.
The thought that a city the size of Cincinnati can achieve the third highest passenger numbers in Ohio by having a total of 120 passengers pass through its doors in a week seems really odd from a European perspective.

... Yah... but a few years ago, a group of asshats got together and elected craptacular Governor Kasichs to rule the GREAT STATE of OHIO! At that time, the Obama stimulus plan was just getting off the ground and the Fed had earmarked several hundred million dollars for intercity rail (Ohio currently has none 'tween it's major cities). Kasichs, along with the abovementioned asshats, refused the money if they couldn't use it towards freight (which has been in decline for decades) or building more 8 lane super freeways so sigh... in order to get from Dayton to Cleveland, I can drive, fly, walk or ride a bike but heaven forbid that I plop a few on a train ticket and get there... efficiently!!!!!!!!!! Ok, rant over (I'll have to wait until gas is cheap again to visit the Rock and Roll hall of fame).
