Which MTB shoes on road?

Postby Burt25 » Thu Dec 06, 2012 20:43 pm

I'm getting my first pair of proper shoes having bought a pair of shimano A520 'touring' SPD pedals. I was considering either shimano M088 or M162 or RT82 shoes which are a touring SPD shoe . I have to admit I the main reason I'm looking at the M162's is because they are in white and look great, but has anyone any experience of either of these on a road bike?

Once your foot is attached to the pedal it makes very little difference what clipless system you are using. So just buy the shoes that a) fit you b) you like the look of c) are in your budget.

Some people will believe that you are the devil for not buying road shoes and pedals and some will think that you have chosen wisely because walking with recessed cleats is a lot easier. You pays your money and you takes your choice!

For me I would favour fit over looks any time. You shouldn't be looking at your pretty shoes when riding. Your feet however will tell you if they don't fit. Get to a shop and try some on.

+1
I was looking to replace my Shimano touring SPD shoes when the salesman offered up a pair of Sidis mtb shoes that looked similar and were on sale. As soon as I tried them on there was no going back.
Obviously I would recommend Sidis but the main moral is that you have try them on. Everybody's feet are different.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

I went in for a fit @ the lbs recently thinking I was going to pick up a pair of Shimano mtb shoes all day long.

however, my all the shimano shoes I tried (most that you have mentioned below were to wide). The shoes that felt right were a pair of 2013 specialized mtb sport shoes in a size up than i normally have.

definitely agree with the other posters to go and try a load on.

I use the Shimano RT82 - no problems with them. Looks like a "road" shoe but don't slide all over the cafe stop :-)

I use the dhb m1.0 for my commute to work. Used them for nearly a year, good as gold. Cheap (£35), comfy and easier than walking in roasd shoes.

After trying the Shimano M087 and RT82 I ended up buying the Specialized Elite Touring Road shoe. I have large feet and the Shimanos were too narrow, even the wide versions. The specialized feels just right for me.

Spesh BG here. Ratchets are more consistent than 3 velcros, which creep a tad, but usually more cash. Shimano shoes are good but Spesh pip them IMO. Carbon soles are good+stiff+light but again more cash. BG insoles are a good upgrade, and can be fitted to any make. Try on - it's the fit that matters.

Specialized sport MTB shoe. Tough enough for the trail, not too chunky to look out of place on a road bike.

Thanks guys for your replies- have ordered a couple of pairs from Chain reaction which I can try on at my leisure- have already tried shimanos in store so know that they fit. Obviously fit is most importaant, but it is of course a bonus if they look the part too.
