Goyt Valley One Way

Postby rj183600 » Fri Dec 21, 2012 09:25 am

Does anyone know if the Goyt Valley one way is exempt for cyclists to go down the wrong way. It makes such a good link up from the Cat and Fiddle when heading down to Buxton or Whaley Bridge. I've been down it a couple of times but always feel naughty. There is a sign saying one way except "exempted vehicles" at the bottom but I've not seen a sign which tells me what exempted vehicels are. Any one know? Cheers!

I know what you mean... It's not exempt, but I have done it the wrong way round many times... just go very slowly and make sure you are not in the way of the (little) traffic coming the other way round.

People have told me it's ok to go the wrong way on a bike, I'm not sure what the official line is though. I prefer to climb Windgather or Long Hill then go up Goyt Valley and descend the Cat & Fiddle anyway as I don't really like climbing the Cat & Fiddle.

Exempted vehicles are, I think, park ranger type things and, I suppose, emergency vehicles. I wouldn't bother doing it the "wrong" way as I would be taking it too steady for fear of traffic coming the other way. Also plenty of walkers who are really only thinking about traffic going the "right" way.
It isn't a good way to Buxton in any case. Straight down the Cat and Fiddle then onto the A53 into Buxton. If you want to go to Whaley Bridge you can pick up Long Hill in Buxton
