~£1000 bike suggestions + opinions

Postby reidy- » Sun Jan 06, 2013 15:06 pm

I know there are plenty of posts on this matter but I fell this does warrant another thread;

I'm basically ready to shell out £1000 on a road bike, although I have never ridden a proper road bike before I do put plenty of miles on my MTB which is a cube reaction GTC (which embarrassingly spends most of its time on the road with slicks)

I'm pretty torn up though between a few options;

1) go cheap(ish) and cheerful and buy the sensa romagna with the tiagra groupset at roughly £670
http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/b ... -2013.html

2) Middle of the road sensa Trentino at ~£900 with the 105 groupset

or 3 go a little bit crazy and buy the Ribble grand fonodo (it looks epic) with the Campagnolo 2013 Veloce groupset and the Campagnolo Khamsin wheelset at ~£1150

The idea is to start racing/sportives, any other suggestions would be appreciated I also quite like the CAAD10, & the boardman race however I am 6'3 and I doubt the boardman will fit

It is worth test riding a few bikes to see what sort of bike suits e.g relaxed geometry Giant Defy or full on racer CAAD 10.

I'd suggest a look at what Canyon have. Either a Roadlite AL or Ultimate Al.

Are you buying via C2W as Ribble apparently won't let you top up.

Be interested to see how this thread turns out as the Sensa's are getting very good reviews.

No its not C2W my company doesn't bother with it as it's too much paper work.. :shock: this is with a 6 man HR/H&S team for a 300man company pretty shoddy IMO

Test ride before you buy. Unless you know the frame geometry that suits you well it is very easy to end up buying something that does not quite feel right.

Just bought a Moda Intro - Tiagra gears, FSA Omega compact, ridden it for 40 odd miles on my commute & can very much recommend it - £700.
