Garmin 810/510

Postby iPip » Sun Jan 06, 2013 15:15 pm

I see these are now listed on the Garmin shop.

I love my 500, but I just know the 510 will haunt me until I give in!

Interesting - but I'm delighted with my 500. No plans to change. I wonder what the battery life is like on the 510 compared to the 500. (I haven't read the full article about it where it may say)

The 810 seems something of a disappointment....

Comparing it with the 800 shows that the 810:

- has a slightly longer battery life
- syncs to the computer automatically
- has a virtual partner feature (I thought the 800 had that, I guess not).

Not sure it's worth the extra - what am I missing?

800 Does have the virtual partner feature. Disappointing indeed, but in a good way, doesn't outdate my 800 too much.

Are you thinking they're going to announce a 900 at CES as well?

Interesting that the 510 (and I assume the 810) can also use the GLONASS GPS system, which I suppose might give better coverage sometimes (though I've never had any real problems with the 500 and plain old GPS). Not sure about the various connectivity features. I guess when on tour it would be nice to be able to upload the data at the end of the day.

Actually, now i've read the review I don't think i'll be bothering unless I need to. I'd like the bike profile function and wireless sync, but even that doesn't look to be proper, full wireless sync anyway. I'm not too fussed about screen or interface changes as I rarely touch my edge when riding anyway and only occasionally glance at the screen (usually to see if I'm on the 30% gradient it feels like!).

The 810 specifically states that it's not got GLONASS support. I don't know why the 510 does but not the 810?

Has there been any announcement on prices of these new devices?

£249.99 for the 510. The link in the first post should show them all.

there is a bike radar review on the main page with videos.
the guy says the 510 is aimed more at MTB'rs so thats why it supports the different GPS due to tree cover and canyons apparently..
why is it another £110 if you want maps.??

£475 for the best 810 is way over the top...

Thanks didn't realise it was live on website

But 510 is $330 vs 500 $250
Which is circa £205 vs £155

Cadence speed sensor is all you need when you are in tree cover. The only advantage I can see is bluetooth connectivity which should get round all the dodgy usb issues that the old 800 was plagued with.

Biggest problem with the Edge has always been bugs in the software and long term reliability. I can't see anyone would spend this kind of money. The 800 is expensive enough.

The 500 seems to be very popular compared to the 800. IS it purely because of price?

Saw this review too. Not exactly glowing is it?

Given the big increase in size and weight of the 510 (a bad thing IMO), one might have hoped that a smartphone might not have been necessary.

I used to use my Iphone for Strava, then found the 500 and love it.

I see no reason to start carrying the Iphone round again too.
