Upgrade or new bike?

Postby Jeremy Knox » Mon Jan 14, 2013 19:58 pm

I have a nice 2007 Specialized Roubaix elite that probably could do with a new bottom bracket/chainring and upgrade.
I have some fairly big rides planned for 2013, including the etape, and I don't want to be let down by my bike.
Do I refurb' my existing bike with Ultegra wheels, chainring/chain/cassette/ derailleurs... @ £650 + labour or do I go for it and buy a Focus Izalco Pro 1.0 @ £2.9K or Pro 3.0 @ £2.1K ?
Please advise...

Can you afford £2k or £650? How strong rider are you? I guess that new wheels will make the biggest difference and stock wheels on bikes up to £2.5k seem to be a compromise. If it were me I would refurb but thaat because I don't have £2.5k to spunk er invest in a new bike.

new wheels are a good upgrade, if you have the money to spend on a new bike (make current one winter ride?) then do it if you really want. i have just forked out a fortune on a bike that my ability doesnt match but how many of us do!?

Good point - not sure if the Pro 1.0 DA spec would be wasted on me. Pro 3.0 looks similar spec to the Ultegra investment on my Specialized but with a better frame. Didn't want to upgrade my bike and then wish I'd bought a new one ...

well i started off wanting a second bike i guess for winter my current bike is a caad 8 so reasonable bike so to buy a bike as second or winter bike was looking dfficult without costing more than the caad and i have always wanted titanium so after saving etc ordered an echo from enigma(not arrived yet) but its the bike i always longed for and spending on anything else would keep me wanting this one(some will say you always want a new bike and i am sure this is true too).

Upgrade and get a really good pair of wheels & a full service.

If you like the frame/setup you currently have upgrade but buy second hand, especially if your not fussy about mix and match groupset. Just changed the 9 speed Sora/Tiagra/FSA chainset on my bike to 10 speed Ultegra 6600 (with 105 cassette, chainset and KMC chain for budget reasons) for about £170ish. Wheels wise I decided to go for Planet X Al30's over Ultegras.
