winter road tyres?

Postby ralphy1967 » Sun Jan 20, 2013 19:21 pm

Living in the north east of England we have our share of nasty weather, can anyone recommend a winter tyre for either rain/slight frost. I'm very cautious on cornering at the moment and would like to feel more secure during winter.

Cheers

Keep the same attitude and save money on tyres.

Any tyre will lose grip on dodgy road surface/conditions.

What tyres do you have now?

Conti 4 Seasons are good in the wet but I wouldn't trust or test out any bike tyres if there is frost on the roads - that tends to indicate a risk of black ice somewhere up the road.

Hey ralphy, another north east resident here

This is the second winter I've been using my 28mm Conti Gatorskins. I don't think any tyre will give you confidence if it's icy, however I have been out on a couple of really icy rides this winter with these tyres and can't fault them. Despite the heavy roads littered with sticks and grit/gravel the tyres still show no signs of cuts/nicks etc.

I won't use anything else................................until the 27mm Vittoria Open Pave clinchers are available

Nothing wrong with those, sure they may not be as durable as a Gatorskin but they will have more grip.

I'm a fan of Conti 4 Seasons for winter riding - give me more confidence in the wet than Gatorskins

Durano Plus seems to be reasonably grippy and, above all, unlikely to result in a visit from the fairy.

That's a big consideration, not having to change a tube.
