Cycling in Sorrento/Amalfi Coast

Postby KingOfTheTailwind » Thu Jan 24, 2013 12:06 pm

We're honeymooning in Sorrento in August.

While the future wife will be happy sipping limoncello beside the pool at our clifftop hotel, I'll get bored fairly quickly!

Anyone cycled the Amalfi Coast/Sorrento Peninsula? Any good hire companies in Sorrento? Not looking a cycle tour, just to rent a decent road bike.

It is spectacularly beautiful... if you get the chance, you can climb the Vesuvio, the only Volcano in peninsular Italy... It hasn't erupted for 500 years or so, so you should be OK.
It is a bit harder than the Alpe d'Huez...

I also honeymooned there. Last September. It is amazingly beautiful, and I was very jealous of the many cyclists I saw riding that coastline.

I didn't do any riding there (Mrs wouldnt allow it) But I will be going back to do some riding at some point. Very hilly in parts, so rent a compact! and enjoy.

Try this lot: http://www.rentalbikeitaly.com/p/bicycle-rental.html

They will drop-off and collect from Sorrento, have some decent bikes, and get good testimonials. But not cheap.

I'd prefer to bring my own bike, but it seems like a bit of a hassle for a honeymoon. Probably wouldn't go down well! For a couple of days cycling I think i'd rather just hire. Thanks for the link, I'll get a quote from them.

I agree it looks beautiful. I'd have to get some serious climing training in before tackling Vesuvius!

Its the most beautiful place - there is a bike shop there too, not sure if they hire - I got some local kit- its off one of the streets off teh corso italia as you head out towrads naples (do avoid naples if you can)- also theres a route some locals do (i got chatting to one) its a hilly loop - you head eastwards and then nip off up a road called via nastro verde - it loops back to the sorrento town centre - impossible to get lost. it does get roasty toasty so early morns/ late evenings are best. if you go along the amalfi coast you even get to pass roger moores house - his house number is 007, hehe.

Its really beautiful, I went years ago with my friend. If you go up the volcano then wear a pair of walking boots or trainers.Do not wear sandals and tell this to your wife as well. Theres loads of gravel and it goes straight in sandals and makes it impossible to walk. Dont make the same mistake as me.
Its also worth a trip over to Capri and the boat trips are nice.
Sorry I dont know anything about the cycling there.
