Removing inner chain ring, 2 bolts just spinning, any ideas?

Postby Escher303 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 16:29 pm

I am trying to remove the inner chainring from my 105 double. Two of the bolts once loosened a little are now just spinning with the nut still attached. There is a slot on the back but the bolt protrudes too much to use a screwdriver to hold the nut (and the slots are a bit wide really to take a screwdriver - doesn't look like it is designed for that) and it is too flush to the back of the chainring to hold with pliers.

Any ideas on how to hold the nut so I can remove the bolts? Is a special tool required?

Cheers

You need the park chainring tool

So a different brand one won't work then?

Of course it will... you can use a coin for what that matters

but as in this case the bolt is sticking through you will need to take a file to the coin.

Once you get it off I suggest replacing the chainring bolts with the token version. They have an Allen bolt as normal but the nut has a torx head. Much easier to deal with in the future.

And slap some copperslip in there so it doesn't seize up causing same said aformentioned problem.

The Park Tools tool is about £2.50 or something a silly from CRC.
This is only a joke by the way, I am in no way implying directly or otherwise that there is any kind of link or similarity between BR and North Korea :)
