Mavic Aksium Upgrade - Recomendations

Postby polska1979 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 00:02 am

Evening all

I am in the market for a new set of wheels, currently running Mavic Aksiums.

This year I'm looking to improve my performance with an aim of starting crit or road racing (Cat 4) or both

I do a few sportives and have the lakeland loop and cheshire cat booked.

So, with a budget of between 300 and £400 - what would you guys recommend and why?

Could I get a wheel that would suit as an all rounder perhaps?

ideally, would want them to be black :-)

Got these for a similar brilliant deal from wiggle last year.

Very light for clinchers at this price and bullet proof/flex free for racing. You will probably get alot of recommendations for mavic kysriums which are good but not as good as these. I run the campag neutrons on my cervelo with SRAM and they are immense.

For what you're looking to spend I'd try for some kyseriums , tbh they are light ,bombproof and don't have a pop off cap over the hub bearings , just my 2p but after upgrading from Shimano R500s they are just as strong but a helluva lot lighter

I would get some handbuilts - you can get some novatec hubs on Open Pro and double butted spokes at a decent price. You will get a really stiff wheel and easy to fix if you break spokes or crash meaning you don't have to wait to order parts in.
