Stiff Neck

Postby Xcelerator » Fri Feb 08, 2013 10:50 am

Does anyone suffer from neck ache/neck stiffness when in the drop position, particularly on long descents where you have to keep your eyes fully on the road ahead?

Any ideas on how to overcome this or is it just one of those things?

If your new to riding on the drops then it does take a little while to get used to.

BR did something a few years ago but the exercises are still relevant - ... ers-14702/

Good as those particular strengthening exercises are imo they are not really going to help with the more demanding question of flexibility around the neck and head.. TV with his own style..
He does have a pronounced head at 90 degrees to the rest of the body and seemingly can hold this for long periods of time.
One thing may help .. helmet high on forehead.. no peaked cap under.. even the top ridge of eyeglasses may hinder... so good quality glasses where they stay 'put' and not slide down .
You just have to practise it more like what he does

Correct position to start with, no tight clothing round neck ( or low cap/helmet etc) and practice. Don't forget to relax shoulders too!

It turns out that if you do something that your body doesn't really like, it tends to adapt to it. In short, ride more in that position

Thanks for the replies. Yes I think more practice will help as it is easy to be lazy about getting into the drop position on the flat!
