DHB Aeron Pro bib shorts first impressions

Postby Raffles » Sat Feb 09, 2013 18:06 pm

THEY ARE WONDERFUL !!

I received a 25% off voucher from wiggle and on thursday I used it to buy a pair of the aeron pro`s, would you believe it they arrived today (saturday) ......way to go wiggle :D The full price is £67 but due to my voucher I got em for £50.They are the top of that range and come with a pad that is thinner where the meat and two veg reside and becomes a right ole wedge where the sit bones are. It was bucketing it down this morning so I climbed back into bed and gave the club run a miss, I went out this afternoon on my own and I donned the aerons under thin leggings with no pad. To say the pad is a cracker is an understatement as my entire ride was one of bum bliss ( !! ) as I never felt pressure there during the entire ride and the pro`s were an absolute joy to use. Im so impressed that im going to be picking up a second pair.....................yep I thought they were that good.

Before I ordered them I checked the review for them here on bikeradar and they got 5 stars , I also read other reviews from various sites and I couldnt find a bad word about them. Ive also got B`Twin supportive 7 bibs which look visually very like the pros in that the leg grippers at the bottom are white , they cost 50 quid, have gel insert and are the top of the b`twin range but they dont come anywhere close in performance terms. Sizewise regarding the pros I am 5 ft 9 inches with short@rse 30 inch inseam and I wear loose size 36 trousers and the size large was a perfect fit on me.

I also tried the High 5 Zero Extreme with Caffeine tabs for the first time today. Thankfully they dissolve very quickly in water and taste quite palatable. They dont have any calories so they will not provide energy boost. Id read that some users had stomach cramps , the need to piddle frequently and excessive farting after using them but I can say I sufferred none of those. There definitely isnt an increase in energy after drinking it, but todays ride was one I know very well and am well aware of when the legs start to tire. I found that at the sections where im used to the legs feeling leaden , it simply didnt happen :D and I was able to keep the cranks turning over. I set out to make sure I downed 1 litre of fluid during every hour I was out and I dont know how much that had to do with it but ive got the rest of the tube of tabs to use up over my next rides and Ill see how it goes.

Im always buying bike things and you can count onabout very few fingers the number of reviews ive written , this is because im admittedly lazy and id only leave views if something was amazingly good or awful. Today I was very impressed with the aerons and absolutely believe they offer outstanding value for money as they would hold their own against different branded products that cost a lot more.

Thanks raffles, Ive been hedging on these, and not wanting to look silly on asking another "newishby" question.
Good to see some feedbacks on mid-budget? kit.

Thanks G. :)

you are very welcome, if you spend the 67 quid it will be money well spent and those bibs can cut it with types like castelli which considerably more.

+1 Mine lasted about 7 mths. Quite a nice short but poor durabity, they're used for the turbo now though, but due to the price/offer I bought another pair.

I am sure they are decent enough shorts, but this is precisely my argument about buying better quality in the first place. I paid £85 for my S5 Uno shorts 3 years ago and they are still in pretty much perfect condition.

So what will work out cheaper in the end? The jury is out.

They're my favourite bib shorts atm (compared with Spesh BG, Assos S5 Uno and Castelli Free Race Aeros anyhow), although the stitching is certainly less robust than on the Assos ones (I've had one set since they first came out though so must be well over a year old now).

Satisfaction with cycle shorts is very subjective. What suits one person won't suit another, and magazine reviews are not a great deal of help. I have a pair of DHB Aeron Pro bibshorts (bought after they won a Cycling Plus grouptest) but I wouldn't buy them again. First impressions were good - they fit well, are relatively cheap, and are made of a nice, non-shiny material. Comfort was pretty good on local rides.

But for me the ultimate test of a pair of shorts is to wear them on a touring holiday when I'm cycling for around five hours every day for two or three weeks, often in extreme heat or rain. The DHBs dry quickly, which is useful when you only have two pairs to wear and wash one pair every evening. But I found that the mid and front part of the padding was too thin while the pad rubbed on my right inner thigh. Chamois creme helped but I did suffer discomfort.

In contrast, I have got on really well with Assos F1 Uno S5 bibshorts. They have better quality construction, a slightly thicker front and mid part of the pad and fit more closely round my undercarriage, reducing chafing. I've also noticed it's better to tour with two different makes of shorts rather than two of the same make. I find this reduces the risk of pressure points and chafing developing.

Also they have the same pad as Rapha classic bibs, I like mine a lot but haven't worn them much yet
Rule #5 // Harden The fark Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

DHB Aeron Pros have the same pad as the Rapha classic?!?

Shall we play a game of spot the difference?
