Confusion over Forks!

Postby mightyi » Sun Mar 10, 2013 15:36 pm

Hi all

Been out of the MTB arena for a while so have fallen behind on a lot of the tech available these days!

I've just bought a 2009 Cube Attention as my "project bike". The original plan was to ride and upgrade as i went along - but it seems there are a few more problems with this bike than i first thought! I've just bought replacement disc brakes (Deore M596) to replace the odd units F&R that were on it. However, I've run into a bit of a problems with regards to the headset and forks. The previous owner has replaced the original forks with a set of 08/09 Marzocchi Bomber MZ Comp forks, which have definitely seen better days! I was going to service them, but cannot find any information or service kits anywhere to help me along with this. It would also appears that the headset/stem/handlebars have also been replaced at some point. The headset is an unnamed Ritchey model but doesn't look like it fits true; so the plan is to look for a s/h set of possibly Rebas (if i can find a decent set!) and stick a new headset and stem into the mix.

This is where i run into a problem! I cannot find anywhere the dimensions of the headtube for the bike. I would have suspected a 1 1/8" diameter steerer tube, but measuring last night, the steerer tube appears to be 25.4mm on the forks? I can also find no information on the forks about the steerer tube diameter - i'm surprised that they would be 1"? All i have been able to determine so far is that the forks aren't tapered (without taking them out obviously).

Can anyone give me any pointers please?

Hi guys

Thanks for the responses. I did look at said website during my searches before, hence my confusion! The headset does appear to be an internal/semi integrated headset - attached pictures below. I think the only way I can measure the internal diameter of the steerer tube accurately is to strip down?

The red arrow on the third picture is indicating the uneven spacing on the upper headset.

It's an inch and an eighth.

@supersonic many thanks for your help! Can i ask how you worked that out? must admit it's thrown me somewhat; especially when every time i've measured the outside diameter of the fork tube it comes out as 25.4mm!

They don't make 1" forks anymore! All modern frames and forks are at least an inch and an eighth.

Well that's what i suspected...but wasn't absolutely sure with the forks being 2008 models.

I took the plunge and stripped the headset and forks as i wanted to find out what the grinding noise was coming from the bottom of the head tube - and found a plastic collar looking somewhat uncomfortable below the bearings! It also looks like the headtube support 1.5" and the headset is a 1.5" > 1 1/8" reducing one - correct?

Not sure how you stretched your ruler?
