Peak District Conditions?

Postby freebs » Wed Mar 27, 2013 08:21 am

Hi all, I'm travelling up to the Peaks this weekend and was wondering about the road/off road conditions? Would I be best taking the road or mountain bike? Any advice appreciated.

I am due up in the peaks this weekend as well. The caravan site that we are staying on is still cut off due to drifting snow across the road, but this is sue to be cleared today. This is near Hulme End in the south of the Peak district.

I have been looking at the council website and it seems that the Hope Valley still has lots of roads blocked so I would assume that the side roads would also be blocked. The website link is below to show the roads that are closed.

I'm going to take my road bike in the hope that it thaws towards the end of the weekend.

I guess it depends on just where you are going. Around here the main roads are open but many side roads are still blocked with snow drifts. If you can get to your destination you may be ok on a mountain bike. I wouldn't fancy being on my road bike this weekend - we are expecting more snow.

It's going to be super cold and icy this weekend so I'd recommend a mountain bike... there will still be some impassable drifts on many trails though such as Pennine Bridleway from Rushup Edge to Hayfield... expect some bike carrying.

Thanks, Chin. I'm coming over from Alderley Edge to Macc where I've ridden before going through Macc Forest and towards the Cat & Fiddle. I was going to go on a route round Edale, Hayfield and Castleton. Do you have any recommendations? (I've got maps of the area so no need to describe the routes!)
