Mavic cosmic sl noise!

Postby thebadgerboy1982 » Tue Apr 02, 2013 18:57 pm

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help as my new wheels are driving me mad!
My mavic cosmic sl's are about 100miles old and the spokes are creaking really badly. It's definitely the spokes and not the crank etc. the wheels are true and round, I haven't got a spoke tension meter but the ping test made the drive side spokes sound the same and also the radial non-drive spokes sound the same.
The noise is only when I'm out of the saddle pumping on the pedals, both up hill and driving on the flat.
I've searched some other forums as well as google with limited success. What is the best fix?

Thanks

Hi BadgerBoy,

It's always hard to diagnose a noise without a good inspection of the wheel. These sound like they should still be within the 1 year Mavic warranty policy. I'd recommend taking them to your local Mavic dealer for inspection. They may be able to sort it in store or, if not, they'll send them to the Mavic Service Centre to sort. That's probably the easiest and fastest way to get you back on the road "noise free".

All the best,

Mike

Overtightening Mavic QRs is notorious for causing creaking.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Hi,

Think the problem is sorted. It turns out that mavic don't load their bearings fully prior to selling them to prevent people overloading the bearings when tightening the qr too much. I've adjusted the bearings and the noise is gone!
