Glute pain

Postby ozzy1000_0 » Fri Apr 12, 2013 08:59 am

Hi all,
My ars* hurts....

I've been cycling properly for about 3 years now, through the autumn last year I slacked right off and did very little, but have been fairly consistent since jan. my weekly average since the 1st jan is 105 so I'm not doing a lot of miles but for the last 6 weeks or so I've been doing some fairly hard intervals to try and get a bit of speed.

for the last few weeks I have had a dull ache deep in my glutes. Its on both sides and it doesn't really go away, last week I did a full 7 days of no cycling to try and get it to clear up, I stretch my LT's and Glutes fairly well but it doesn't go away... its with me all day but strangely doesn't hurt on rides upto about 45-50miles, but then on longer runs it really tightens up and hurts...

is it my bike position?? if so what sort of adjustment might remedy this?? any ideas?

all the best,

O

I know you said you are stretching the glute but are you targeting the Piriformis.

It's a classic for the symptoms you describe. Need lateral stretching of the leg hip joint.

Better safe than sorry I would say. If you have an unexplained pain that just won't go away for weeks on end then I'd pay a visit to the doctor.

Have you consider a professional bike fit?

Then after the Doctor has heard what he said the obvious diagnosis would be "don't do what gives you pain. Because it's my job to see that you are fit to work not do 70 mile rides". :D

If you want a proper diagnosis you should go private to a specialist.

If you want to be a strong rider you have to do strong things.
However if you train like a cart horse you'll race like one.

thanks for all the replies, sorry I didn't get back sooner, I've been really busy.

after reading replies and searching on the web, I'moved my seat forward quite dramatically, about 1.5cm. I think I was definitely too far back. that and more stretching have definitely made a difference, its much better. I still get other aches though, but I'm not sure its due to cyling... I think I'll go to the Dr's aswell..

thanks for the input and food for thought,

O
