best entry level bike sold in a shop not online approx £500

Friend of mine wants to buy their first bike and keeps on asking me what I think of this or that deal. I'm urging them to buy whatever they go for from a shop so it can be set up right for them (no mechanical skills) and sort anything that goes wrong under warranty without posting etc

So far it looks like the Triban 3 or 5 (the 3 looks to have gone downhill of late in terms of quality parts etc - correct?) Or maybe a Giant Defy 5 from the LBS or a Carrera from Halfords.

For the money the Triban 5 looks perfect but thoughts very welcome.
