I seem to be faster on my wife's rubbish bike..!

Postby davemcclements » Tue Jun 18, 2013 20:46 pm

I was recently hit my a car in Liverpool and my Boardman Comp was badly damaged. I loved that bike, it has given me the cycling bug and now I'm addicted.

Since crashing I've been using my wife's 2011 Raleigh Airlight 100 and have set several PB's. Tonight I won a KOM on a 1km Strava segment that I've been trying to take for ages.

I can't understand how I'm faster on her heavier, lower spec bike that is way too small for me (47cm frame, I'm 5'10").

I've just spent the insurance money on a Rose Carbon Pro 3000 Ultegra. It looks lovely and weighs in at 7.15kg.

Based on my recent experience I suspect I should have saved the money and bought a second hand BMX!!

Is it the version with a red stripe? If so, everyone knows that red stripes make a bike 6.7% quicker.
Black stripes only make it 4.2% quicker.

Blue stripes..!

The segment is Initially gently downhill, then a bit of up with bumpy road...

...but I seem to be doing well on all segments.

I've been riding a lot less and have resolving pain in arm and knee from the crash.

I'm just surprised and think its interesting that performance seems better.

You may as well start wearing her knickers and be done with it...

With the saddle right up and a limited amount of bar raise you're probably more aero. Ok on short rides, probably uncomfortable on longer ones though.

Bikes that are too small can give you an advantage on short sprints. Just look at all the TTers with frames that are a size down and elbows practically touching their knees.

Different bike but the same engine (i.e. you), I think it might just be a case of you improving as a cyclist. Imagine what you will be like on the Rose.

I took wor lasses bike out the other day, it's a nice bike but is abotu 2kg heavier than mine. Made naff all difference.

The biggest 'speed' difference on my main ride was slamming the bars and rasing the seat as far as it will go. Cheerfully tick along at 30kph now.
