New tyre - how long to scrub in?

Postby I am the god of hell fire » Wed Jul 03, 2013 06:04 am

Ive just fitted a brand new rear tyre
Its very shiny, a bit greasy to touch and has a lovely bead from the mould running down the middle

For how many km would you take it easy before leaning on it for some heroic cornering?

I think your average road surface has more imperfections than a bit of shine and some scraps of rubber. It would only be a problem if you we're in a velodrome.

The release agent will scrub off in only a couple of hours of riding. The bead or knobbles might take longer, but are not worth worrying about it.

I have heard of some people who will give the new tyre a scrubbing with hot water before they head out on it, but personally, I would rather be out riding my bike.

Take it steady for the first hour or two, especially if it is wet, then you should be good to go.

Yeah, couple of hours should do it. I won't ride a brand new tyre in the rain though, until I've scrubbed it in. If you have to ride it in the wet, be very careful.

Been riding Continental GP 4 Seasons for 500 miles and the centre bit is still just about here. I was conscious of the 'new tyre' concerns for about 50 miles before I went full on and all was good, so wouldn't be overly worried

erm, none. Just get out there and ride. For the weight and relative coefficients of friction involved, especially on the rear, unless it's a glass smooth wet surface you probably won't even notice any difference. Tyre pressure will have far more effect. If you're at all concerned, run a few psi lower initially, but I'd just fit and forget.

I'd say a couple of laps of your street should do it. Make sure you scrub up the edges too in some gentle turns.

I'd not worry about the rubber central bit.
