Rapha classic bibs- worth the money?

Postby KulaBen » Wed Jul 24, 2013 21:01 pm

I'm considering buying some Rapha bibs, but are they worth the extra money? Castelli free aeros are my current favourites, how do they compare?

You can try The Rapha Classic bibs and send them back if you don't like them. They have the Cytech pad in them which is used by a number of other brands I believe. Not sure if I like them. For me I think Assos Mille are better on the bum.

Love mine, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair. Haven't tried the castelli, but the rapha bibs are a big improvement over the gore I'd previously used.

Rapha lightweights. Have just taken over from my castelli as preferred bibs.

After spending a lot of $ on bibs over the last few decades, I'm done with paying £100+ for a pair.

Turned off my snobbery radar recently and bought a pair of the DHB Aeron Pro's on basis of the glowing reports they get.

I have to say, they are superb! Build quality seems as good- if not better than my Assos/ Santini/ others. Very comfy insert too.

For £50 they put a lot of other brands to shame. Assos shorts I've had have fallen apart, Santini were awful. My now old Giordana Tenax are still going strong and to-date are the best bibs I think I've ever had.

I'd take two pairs of the Aeron Pro's over one pair of Assos anyday....

(never tried Rapha)

^ As above

I have Assos and Rapha bibshorts that I swear by.

I needed some more shorts for a long ride I am doing next week - I couldn't face spending £150 on yet another pair of fancy bibs, so I took a punt on the Aeron Pro bibs.

I've put some decent mileage in them - nothing over 150km so far though, so the truth will out when I do.

They are very well made with good stitching etc. They are comfy with a good pad and decent leg grippers.

Hugely impressed so far.

What's the difference in Pro Race and Free Aero? I have a pair of Castelli's but I'm not sure which ones they are.

Cheers all. On the basis of the 30 day return policy i've ordered some Rapha classics and figure if they ain't all that then I can return them for the Castellis or 2 lots of DHB.

He's talking about the Rapha Pro Race bibs. As good, if not better than Castelli Body Paints.

Rapha Pro Team are very good - sizes are on the smaller side - so size up.

Very comfortable for long days in the saddle.

Rapha clothing has become ridiculously popular recently. I'm a castelli person, and I can't fault their race aero bibs, but I'll have to try rapha just to see the fuss. Same applies with assos too...

LOL - I meant Pro Team too!!!

I like bibs that give a lot of compression. 170cm, 66kg and the PT’s in small fit brilliantly. You have to slide them on carefully as they’re REALLY tight, but once on and the pad’s in position they’re like a second skin. The pad is bang on and you notice that little bit extra up front (matron!) when riding in the drops or on the rivet. Probably not for those with a rugby players build or thighs like Greipel.

Classic's on the other hand feel a wee bit too loose (for me). The pad and fabric is great and the minimal styling is spot on, but I miss the comprtession of the PT's.
