Torque wrenches?

Postby Top_Bhoy » Sat Aug 10, 2013 00:57 am

For a variety of reasons/excuses I'm only now in the middle of a bike build project after having most of the parts for the last 4+ years. Today I've gone out and bought a torque wrench to fit the GXP bottom bracket but find that while it is a reversible wrench the instructions say that it will only torque in a clockwise direction. This defeats the purpose of using the torque wrench as it means only the bracket cup on one side can be torqued with the other side having to be done manually.

Is this normal for a torque wrench, am I doing something wrong or misunderstanding it or can you get bi-directional torque wrenches?

Very common for torque wrenches to only work clockwise. Reversible ones generally have the square drive peg loose in the head. You push this from one side to the other to change direction.

Having torqued one side you should know how much pressure to exert to achieve the setting, I am sure you can manually achieve the same result.

This is what I do myself. To be honest - the bottom bracket cup is the one area i am not too worried about getting teh torque exactly right. Still though i use the torque wrench on one side and hold it at the same distance as my normal ratchet drive handle from the socket. You should then be able to judge the other side near enough by feel.

Cheers guys.

As suggested, I torqued up one side with the tool set then the other by judgment. Still, I took the tool back to the store and as they had no alternative bi-directional one, I got a refund. I can now look for a bi-directional one in a more leisurely manner.
