2014 Domane 4.3 vs 2013 Madone 4.5

Postby Power1000 » Mon Aug 19, 2013 15:07 pm

Hi

I currently ride a mountain bike for city riding and I am looking to buy my first road bike for longer rides. I ride my mountain bike almost everyday commuting to work and want to start doing longer 100km plus rides.

I have been looking at Treks mainly because they are easy to find where I live and I think it would be a safe bet for a first road bike. My LBS has the new 2014 Trek Domane 4.3 in stock and I really like the look of the bike. I am 6'1" and my lbs fitted me for a 60 frame. However, they also offered me a discount on a 2013 Madone 4.5 but they only have it in 58 frame, but said the Madone 58 frame was also a good fit for me given the difference in top tube length. The Madone is fitted with ultegra vs 105 on the Domane and the Madone has nicer tires and other features. Altogether the Madone would be about $600 cheaper after the discount even though it has better components. I was told that the Domane hasn't changed much vs 2013 but that the Madone will change in 2014 so that's why I can get a deal on the 2013 model. They also don't have any 2013 Domane left in inventory.

Hoping to hear some advice. Unfortunately I can't find the 2014 specs online yet but as mentioned I don't think there were major changes to the 2014 Domane 4.3 model other than colour. Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

Personally I would get the Domane as you say you want to do 60km+ rides, which is what the Domane is designed for. However if you are racing (in the Strava or real sense) then the Madone will give you that extra 1%.

Thanks Mark, I am leaning in that direction as well. It seems that wheel sets are quite expensive and the Madone does come with a better package including better wheel set but since I don't plan to race, I think I have almost made my decision to go with the Domane.

Whatever bike you get your going to be back on here asking what wheelset upgrade, so I would ignore the wheels you get initially and assume you are going to replace them ;)
