OT - Duvel & other Belgian beer glasses

Postby rubertoe » Tue Aug 20, 2013 12:31 pm

Bit left field,

I am off to a BBQ on Saturday and am discussing which beers to bring. Belgian beer is the obvious choice and I am an advocate of Duvel along with many others....

I want to get some glasses (I know that they are a gimmick) to take to drink from.

Duval, Leffe any other chalice style glasses.

Anyone know where I can get some, pretty sharpish and pretty cheap (and I don't want to pilfer a load from the various boozers in Soho...)

It's got to be Kwak. They won the last National Silly Glass Design Competition in 1842, all the other brewers spat the dummy as they could never come up with a more absurd design so the competition hasn't been held since.

I have 2 of those Kwak glasses - got them both for the same birthday one year from 2 different people. I think one may have come from Amazon.

you could try one of the off licenses from the bottom of this list - I'm pretty sure Nelson wines sells a couple of glasses. And Selfridges/John Lewis food hall probably does some sort of Duvel gift pack with beer & a glass.

Never ever mention that place by name, EVER.
Besides, the glasses come in kit form.

Is Belgian beer really an obvious choice for a BBQ?

Something lighter and more quaffable, shirley? Get one of those boxes of a nice session beer from a local brewery or specialist offy. Duvel will have you monged within an hour or two.

I more of a Westons Vintage man myself (8.2%)

As you can probably tell. I like my beer stong, I wont drink anything that is less than 5%...

funnily enough I was going to say the same about kwak - it's 8.5% so drinking that midday before food is served could get messy....

small bottles of hoegarden? with this glass http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80081733/

Utobeer in Borough Market.
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

Not sure he does sell glasses - I tried to pick one up there a while back and he told me he doesn't stock them as they are hard to shift. All the more space for beer I suppose!

Glasses or no glasses that shop is well worth a visit if you can get to South Wimbledon. A fantastic selection of beer (more than the 20-30 mentioned on the website I'd say) and much cheaper than Utobeer.

If it was me, I'd go to the Kernel brewery in Bermondsey on Saturday morning and get some of their rather splendid beer. Their table beer is a great session drink, perfect for BBQs even if it's low alcohol (for you at least) and their pale ales are great too and a higher ABV. You can get it at Utobeer etc but it's cheaper straight from the source.

Not sure if they sell Kernel specific glasses.

Belgian glasses - I have a fun Delirium Tremens one with the pink elephants on it and another from Bruges with a jester.
