A Help or hindrance with Road Safety?

Postby spen666 » Thu Oct 10, 2013 08:40 am

On the Road CC website, they are talking about rear lazer lights that they seem to think are a good safety device (if you believe their twitter feed)

There is a video of the lights in action.

Watch it and see if like me you are concerned that these lines it projects will havethe opposite effect to that intended. I think motorists arelikely to see the line as marking a safe passing distance and will encourage even closer overtakes than before.

Any thoughts?

Thoughts? Yes; it's LASER.

Anything which helps you get noticed without blinding is good in my view.

At the bottom of the article there is a link to a you tube video of the lights in use on the bike.

[Mute point

Is it still a video when it is a digital clip rather than video tape?]

It is mute - the volume control doesn't work

Mea Culpa - that really is a silly error isn't it?

Just to link to the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC5KC1fwObA

the lane the lights create is quite narrow - I would think fine for lower speed travelling - say through town in a 20 limit - but not good for open roads where a rider would want at least 1/2 the lane to travel in.

So basically - the real world video indicated that the lines are not visible unless you're looking for them ... so pointless ... :)

I watched the actual real world one.

Well, thats a few pound saved then. Useless.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

Real world photo...
Image

I ran an x-fire laser light for a few weeks, it looked pretty neat, but only other cyclists seemed to notice it.
Battery life is kack, they're as waterproof as a sock and the overall build quality is appauling.

Still fun though... LASERS!

I have one of those Blaze lights from Kickstarter on order (original delivery date was last April and is now late Nov) which projects a cycle onto the road in front. I'm not sure it promotes safe cycling given that you shouldn't be coming down the side of anything that might need to see it - but it might help people pulling out of side roads... we shall see when it arrives!

Saw one of them being used on the ride home the other day.

Just looks their light is pointing downwards when you pass.

Saw these just nominated for a design award. They look pretty mad. Kind of like Tron. But how can you mount LEDS with caliper brakes?

As someone with an office opposite Harrods the noise cancelling window thingy would be fantastic too as long as it works with bagpipes.
