Giant Defy sizing and winter usage advice needed

Postby bartersb » Sun Oct 13, 2013 21:28 pm

Hi all,

I am considering buying a 2013 Giant Defy 0 as a winter bike. This will not be for commuting. Just for long base mile training (150km rides) at weekends.
The online store I was planning to buy from now only has the bike in large. Do you think this should work for me? I'm 187cm tall & currently ride a Scott CR1 SL 58cm (57.5cm top tube with a 110ml stem) which I'm happy on.

So sizing to one side has anyone here tried to winterfy their Defy wet? I mean does it take 25mm tyres (good ones like Conti Gators which are accurately sized) & mudguards. I've read mixed experiences with the Giant specific defy mudguards.

Thanks all!

Peter

Defy 0 is a good bike. It will take 25mm tyres, I ran Conti 4000s on mine which actually measure about 28mm on the wider rims I use. A large should be about right, I needed a M at 176.5cm but ended up on an M/L which is why I sold the bike eventually. 1m87cm is about 6"2 right? In which case my mate has a L Defy Advanced 2 which fits him well.

Yeah cam in old money that's 6ft1.5.
Did you ever try to fit mudguards?
You are using wider rims? I read that this is the next big thing!

I have a Defy with 25mm tyres and Giants specific mudguards. They fit and work well together but they are not as wide as SKS chromos so you get a little more spray. But of course the chromos do not fit on the Defy because it uses normal drop brakes and the Giant ones are cut out around the brake caliper. Long drop brakes do not work as well in the wet so the Defy is better to ride even with the extra spray.

Never fitted guards on mine as only had it over the summer. I have Archetype rims which are 23mm wide. Certainly feel more comfortable and help cornering etc.
