Has anyone tried a 32t cassette on a 6800 ss derailleur?

Postby sgt822 » Fri Jan 10, 2014 21:13 pm

Need a "insurance gear" for the Fred Whitton.

Hoping for 34 x 32 on my ultegra 6800 but as it's purely for the Fred I don't want the hassle / expense of swapping for a GS derailleur.

I know what the book says before anyone quotes it but previous "28t max" claims were rubbish and my ultegra 6700 easily managed a 30t.

Problem is can't seem to source an 11sp 11-30 cassette and 11 - 32 being the only option above a 28.

So has anyone tried this and got it to work?

?????

You will need to change the derailleur and chain if you want it to work flawlessly. I live in the lakes and trained on my 28 and like you changed to a 32. When I got to the top bits on Hardnott I would have fell of if I had not got out the pedals quick. This year I am on a 30 on new bike with no more expense than the cassette, I would just stick with a 30 there is no difference when your on something that steep Cheers

I have been up this pass on both my road and mountain bikes. From my experience with the mountain bike where I could get as low as 24 x 32, this was far too light. It was not the effort which I found difficult, but it is lack of bike handling skills when it comes to balancing a bicycle on a slope that steep.

Sorry I find scary when you sit down and the front wheel is trying to come off the road and when you stand up you lose traction on the back wheel!
