IceDot - Any good?

Postby Tiltzey Boy » Sun Apr 27, 2014 10:45 am

Mornin' all.

Just read the BikeRadar review on the IceDot

http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/ ... sor-48300/

Sounds like it could be a good thing, so, has anyone got one and are they any good?

Cheers

Tiltz

I read this review the other day.

Good idea and of course you can't put a price on safety... however, seems overpriced.

Why not bypass the hardware. Could an app be produced for a smart phone to the same effect? SPs have all sorts of sensors inside.

^I look forward to seeing people riding around with smartphones cable tied to their head.

Presumably if your head comes to a sudden halt your back pocket wont be far behind in deceleration.

There will be so many false alarms if it's in a jersey pocket.

Well I don't know about gadgets and that sort of stuff but I'd speculate that moving my head from side to side and generally looking around is more stimulating to a sensor - compared to my phone in my rear pocket which I think moves very little.

If the IceDot's sensors work by detecting short sharp gyroscopic movements, I wouldn't have thought that it really matters where on you body the sensor is located so long as it's relatively high up.

Maybe an App programmer can have a pop at such a project. I'm sure if they're successful they'll find more people willing to part with £2 as opposed to the £150-odd cost of the IceDot.

If these ever become common cyclists will never be safe, every kid and every passing idiot in a Vauxhall Corsa will be trying to set them off for a laugh by throwing cans etc.. :)
