Routes out of Puerto Pollensa

Postby fleehouse2 » Sun Jun 08, 2014 16:00 pm

Hi,

I will be holidaying in Puerto Pollensa at the end of July, we go here quite often, but for the first time I have been given the green light to do some cycling out there and will be renting a road bike.

I am hoping to go out for around 3-3.5 hours in the mornings, so nothing mega, hopefully before it gets too hot.

Would anyone be able to provide any suitable routes?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve, if you go pretty often we have probably passed each other at some point!

Here's a few ideas :

1) Head to Pollensa town on the main drag, when you reach the roundabout on the outskirts (after Lidl) carry straight on and climb to the monastery at Lluc, carry on a mile or so (heading towards Sollier) and at the T junction turn left by the petrol station, head down the descent then back through Camari to Campanet. At Campanet you can pick up the back road down the valley and pop out on the main Pollenca/Palma road, turn left and ride a mile or so to the entrance to the golf club, roght at the golf club and take the back roads back to the Port.

2) Do exactly the same route in the opposite direction, both ways are classic routes.

If you want to extend the route then from Campanet head to Buger, Sa Pobla, Alcudia Old Town and back up the bay.

3) Head to the light house at Formentor - guess you know the road but if not it heads up from the roundabout at the sea plane base, great ride but not going to take you 3 hours so provided you don't mind the climbing you can extend it on either the way out or back by turning right (outward journey) at the car park opposite the viewing point at the top of the long climb out the Port and riding up to the watch tower.

Hope that helps for starters.

I'm sure you realise that at the end of July it's going to be super super hot so your 3 hours worth of cycling is probably going to need to start at about 6am at the latest!

The obvious one is the lighthouse road, aside from the shocking road surface on the second half it's still one of the nicest rides on the island and a perfect pre-breakfast jaunt as it's not too far there and back, but with a good amount of climbing.

If you look to the West of Port de Pollenca there are a lot of minor roads which are all a good ride and reasonably flat, you can follow these all the way to Pollenca town.

Thanks guys, yeah the plan is to start at 6, was hoping to start a bit earlier (all my rides are around 5:30 at home, family, you know), but I don't think there is enough light at that time.

Ride to the lighthouse is the one I have earmarked, with the little diversion to the right, as suggested (cheers Steve)

Will put the other route into Google and have a look, just needs to be simple, don't want to be getting lost and stuck out in the heat.

Thanks guys

Cheers

Heading down the coast is also a decent ride, although not especially long it's pretty much flat so you can hammer it out like a time trial.

Steve, if you want to keep it simple just adapt my 1) ride above. Head up to lluc as above - its impossible to get lost, honest. Then turn around and come back the same way, classic climb and descent plus as Mark says above you could also ride down the bay when you arrive back at the Port.

Hi Steve

You can get a really nice map with all the best routes marked from Pro Cycle Hire in Puerto Pollenca. About 10 euros but they last well.

Excellent stuff, Lluc and back seems simple enough even for me, so got that and the ride to the lighthouse. And as you say if I get back with anything left in the tank and it is not too hot, then can shoot down the coast TT style!

Awesome can't wait.

I was in same boat as you with family on holiday and limited time. However it was April.
Just go to Strava and set your location to Pollenca.
Select rides between 30-60 miles long and you'll get a great idea of what you can do and where you can go. You could also just look at rides done in July to see what other people were doing last July...

Either way explore & enjoy.
