Pro bike: Ivan Basso's Cannondale Slice Hi-Mod Giro d'Italia

FSA's Neo Pro crankset will now be part of the Vision lineup and Basso is using a BB30 version here.

  • Cannondale have supplied Ivan Basso (Liquigas) with a special lighter-weight version of their Slice time trial frameset.
  • A special lay-up schedule has supposedly shed 150g from the frame, fork and seatpost.
  • Basso's time trial bike is now BB30-equipped for lighter weight - almost 1.6kg in total! - though he has now lost his SRM power meter.
  • FSA's Neo Pro crankset will now be part of the Vision lineup and Basso is using a BB30 version here.
  • Basso will apparently run 54/42T chainrings for Stage 12's long and undulating time trial.
  • The seat tube shields the rear wheel all the way from the bottom bracket up to the seat stays.
  • Deep-section blades on the Slice fork cut through the wind but we can't help thinking that a new aero frame is imminent.
  • Cannondale run an especially slender level top tube on their Slice aero frame.
  • Basso has his stem slammed right on top of the 125mm-long head tube for a long and low position.
  • Derailleur cables exit down at the bottom bracket shell.
  • Basso's Mavic Io front wheel gets the lightweight treatment as well…
  • …with a slimmed-down and carbon-wrapped front hub.
  • The new Mavic Comete disc uses a lenticular shape on the non-driveside but a flat one on the other.
  • The new Mavic Comete disc uses no foam core between its carbon fibre sheets.
  • Perhaps it's time for Mavic to integrate a magnet directly into the mold so that mechanics no longer have to do things like this?
  • Basso has switched from straight extensions to 'S-bend' extensions since the Tour of California.
  • Even so, the position is still very aggressive.
  • The aluminium Vision Trimax SI aero bar features airfoil sections throughout.
  • Yep, three brake levers sounds about right.
  • There's no need for padding out here so Basso runs just grip tape.
  • Like all Campagnolo-sponsored teams at the Giro, Liquigas' time trial bikes are fitted with the previous generation of Record componentry.
  • Vision by FSA chainrings are matched with a Campagnolo Record 10-speed front derailleur and a Shimano Dura-Ace chain.
  • A custom chain watcher prevents a fallen chain from derailing Basso's hopes in this year's Giro.
  • Basso is using Speedplay Zero Titanium pedals in a special Liquigas green hue.
  • Basso's fi'zi:k Arione saddle has a specially shortened nose in order to meet UCI guidelines for minimum setback.
  • Basso's bike is still equipped with an SRM PowerControl VI computer head but there is no power meter to go with it here.
  • A bit of electrical tape apparently smoothes the lines around the computer transmitter - anything for even a fraction of a second.
