UK time trial round-up: Graves wins Rudy Project 2

Hutch, Randle also in top form

Talented young triathlete Philip Graves made his journey from Yorkshire worthwhile when he won the second round of the Rudy Project National Time Trial Series in Cumbria on Sunday.

Graves, the 20-year-old Clifton CC rider from York, clocked 1hr 5min 56sec for the two-lap course around Bassenthwaite Lake to score his first win in the series.

As well as being the leading espoir rider by more than three and a half minutes, he was overall event winner by 47 seconds, with the experienced Preston Wheelers rider Jimmy Wright having to settle for second spot.

Dominic Munnelly (KB Cycles) completed the podium, 1:40 behind Graves, while pre-race favourite Mark Holton (Shorter Rochford RT) was a non-starter for personal reasons.

With just 20 riders in the senior race, it was again the veterans who bolstered the field for the popular event with 39 riders taking part.

Ian Cooke (Calder Clarion) was top veteran on actual time with 34min 45sec for the one-lap course, beating regular Rudy Project Series campaigner Ian Dalton by just 11 seconds.

And in the category for veterans on target time, it was another stalwart of the Series, VC Meudon’s John Woodburn, who took victory with ease with a plus of 9:53.

The women’s event attracted 14 entries, and Edinburgh Road Club’s Jessica Wilson Young took victory this time, beating VC St Raphael rival Sarah Storey by just five seconds.

Her ride in Cumbria was revenge for the opening round of the series a fortnight ago, where Storey won by four seconds in Kent, and sets up an interesting battle for the overall title.

Back to back wins for Hutch

Former Rudy Project Series winner Michael Hutchinson, who scored an emphatic victory in his first time trial of the season last weekend, made it two victories from two events when he won the Lea Valley CC 25 in Essex on Saturday.

The In Gear-Quickvit RT ace clocked 51min 13sec to win by almost four minutes in a field full of quality, despite a late change of course generally leading to slower times throughout the field.

Originally planned for the E2, a double-booked venue for the headquarters forced organisers to move to the nearby E1/25c which features several roundabouts.

Nevertheless, only 25 riders from a full field dropped out, and all the big hitters chose to continue.

Hutchinson’s time made the course seem like a dragstrip, whereas it was far from it. The battle for the minor placings gave a more accurate impression of the roads, with seven riders all clocking 55-minute times.

Stowmarket and District CC’s Lee Bark was second with 55:08, while just 12 seconds further back was West Suffolk Wheelers’ Peter Balls.

Randle breaks 19 minute '10' barrier

Yorkshire hardman Wayne Randle proved age is no barrier when he scored two victories in two days over 10 miles on courses local to his Barnsley home.

The Planet X rider was quickest in the City Road Club event on the superfast South Cave course in East Yorkshire, clocking 18min 58sec to win the veterans prize.

He was one of ten riders to go under the 20-minute barrier on a superb day for the race, with traffic at a minimum and the temperature getting more ideal as the event went on.

And then 24 hours later he handed out more ‘Randlisation’ as it has become known when he flew round the Hatfield Woodhouse course a few miles further south in 20min 41sec to win by 54 seconds.
