New Year's resolutions from stars of the mountain biking world

The Athertons, Peat, Moseley & more tell us their hopes for 2012

With 2012 just around the corner, we present the resolutions which What Mountain Bike's staff, plus luminaries from the bike industry and sport, hope they'll still be sticking to this time next year.

From professional racers such as Gee and Rachel Atherton, Steve Peat and Matt Page, to industry figures including On One's Brant Richards, they all took some time out to tell us their hopes for the New Year.

Gee Atherton, Downhill World Champion and World Cup winner

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? Cut down on the speeding tickets.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? To try to match the bike to the discipline a bit more accurately. I keep breaking bikes when I end up on a downhill track during a cross-country ride.

What’s your riding resolution? Get back on the BMX - I haven’t ridden skateparks for a long time.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? Prali in Alpi bike resort, Italy. I found it at the end of last summer and have never ridden anywhere like it.

Steve Peat, Downhill World Champion and World Cup winner

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? To be more organised so I can make more time for my family.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? Use my Muc-Off to make my Santa Cruz gleam, then stick my fast fender and crud catchers on to keep it gleaming.

What’s your riding resolution? I have committed to the Cape Epic for 2012 so more miles is a must on my resolution list.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? I have to ride lots of trails next year, its my job! But I would say if the summer is as dry as this year then Wharncliffe will be all time again.

Justin Loretz, Technical Editor, What Mountain Bike

What’s your non-bike specific resolution?  To say the things I think and to do the things I say.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? To love my bike as much as my bike loves me.

What is your riding resolution? To stop thinking of going riding then letting something else get in the way.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? Any that I haven't already ridden, plus the cheeky new line I spotted in my local woods the other day.

Rachel Atherton, Downhill World Champion and World Cup winner

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? To keep dancing! I’m branching out from my normal Irish set dance - dance lessons are where it is AT!

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? To wash my moto bike after EVERY time I ride it, not just once in a blue moon.

What’s your riding resolution? To start riding my BMX at the skatepark again. I used to ride skatepark all the time but stopped. Big mistake.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? Not so much a specific trail but I’ve been wanting to do this for ages. I'll set off at night in the summer on my cross-country bike and ride until the sun is about to come up. Then I'll stop and watch it grace the Welsh mountains with my dog and some friends.  It's going to be awesome! I will say that everyone should ride Corris near Machynlleth, just for the unreal downhill section at the end.

Matt Skinner, Editor, What Mountain Bike

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? To actually keep my resolution to procrastinate less this year.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? To fix things when they need fixing rather then letting them fester, both on the mind and in reality.

What’s your riding resolution? To get into the back of beyond and keep on going.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? Any trail.

Tracy Moseley, Downhill World Champion and World Cup winner

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? Try and get up to date with the new social media world.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? To try and not just stick the hose on my bike to clean it, but to use a bucket and brush and be nice to it.

What’s your riding resolution? Get fitter than I have ever been.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? Some of the natural stuff around Fort William when I go up next year in the Kinlochleven area.

Andy McCandlish, Photographer, What Mountain Bike

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? To use my motorbike more. I was too busy this year to get away on it as much as I would have liked.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? To get all the bikes in my garage into a ridable state, rather than having a 75 percent rolling ratio as I have now.

What’s your riding resolution? More wilderness trails with overnight camps and bivvys. I only got three or four trips away this year and that isn't nearly enough.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? I plan to get back up to the trails on Harris and Lewis this spring to link up more routes into a big one.

Brant Richards, Designer, On-One/Planet X and Titus

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? To spend more time individually with each of my four children, rather than trying to always do things as a family.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? Keep my tyres fresh and new and seasonal, and not ride them until they are bald.

What’s your riding resolution? I'd like to spend less time with both wheels on the ground.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? Spiderpig.

Seb Rogers, Photographer/product tester, What Mountain Bike

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? Work less, play more.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? Take as much care of my bikes as I do of my car.

What’s your riding resolution? Less time in the office, more on the bike.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? Transprovence.

Matt Page, cross-country racer

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? Eat less cake.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? I'm pretty good with maintenance, so I guess to just continue with good habits.

What’s your riding resolution? To ride and explore more of my local area because I know good riding exists, I've just not looked hard enough.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? The descent off the Monte Bellino in the Italian Alps, which is part of the Iron Bike stage race. The longest, most scenic and fun descent I've ever ridden.

Jenny Copnall, former cross-country pro

What’s your non-bike specific resolution? To get out in the fresh air every day without fail whether to ride, walk, run or garden – lungfulls of fresh air keep me happy.

What’s your bike care/maintenance resolution? To buy lots of degreaser for my husband to clean my bikes with and to finally build up a resprayed ex S-GF race bike that is still in bits in the garage. I actually have vastly less bike maintenance these days as I get so little chance to use them.

What’s your riding resolution? Just to get out and enjoy every riding chance I get. With a seven month old daughter this year has been challenging, with lots of very early starts. To ride the mountain bike more would be great as this year has mainly been road and turbo. I have stayed quite fit but yearn the off road.

What’s your must ride trail for 2012? My favourite six hour Chilterns ride would be perfect – if I can get a baby sitter! A summer’s evening blast around Afan would also be fun.
