Q: I've entered a few challenging events this year, and will be getting a new bike. What exactly is the difference between a triple, compact double and a double? I'll need all the help I can get on the hills, so which should I go for?
A: A triple crankset has three chainrings, typically with 52/42/30 teeth per chainring. A race double is 53/39; touring double is 52/42, and a compact is 50/36 or 50/34. If you're looking for a bit more for the hills, get the triple.
