BikeRadar verdict

4 out of 5 stars

"You get what you pay for: this buys ample peace of mind"

Fri 31 Jul 2009, 2:00 pm UTCBy Dr Giles Peacroft, Cycling Plus

The Protect A Cycle is the first bike store to be awarded the police’s Secured By Design mark, as well as a security rating of 1 from the Loss Prevention Certification Board.

It comes flat packed, and you’ll need several hours and a drill to build and secure it to a flat concrete base. There’s a comprehensive manual on the website and all the fixings are included. You’ll need to screw it down though, because it’s not so heavy once in place.

The design is superb: riveted, galvanised steel panels with a floor insert that covers the fixing bolts and is secured itself by another two bolts and a ground anchor.

It comes with the anchor, two Oxford padlocks – though it’s possible to affix four – another for the inside and a Kryptonite flex cable.

These only reach Sold Secure Silver standard, when some insurance policies demand Gold for expensive bikes, though they might make an exception for the whole Protect a Cycle package.

It would certainly take a conscientious, tooled-up thief considerable time to get in and get away, especially if the cable has been upgraded to a tougher chain.

An included weather strip keeps the elements out, though rainwater clinging to the front face has a tendency to drip inside the box once it’s opened.

It’s unobtrusive and a doddle to use: unbolt, and swing the sprung door up. It easily fits three road bikes with the bars overlapping, some spare wheels and a track pump, with room to spare. And it’s available in green or cream.

It's not that good. Thieves literally ripped mine open to steal my brand new Heckler. They did't even touch the padlocks.

Pretty good once assembled though it is expensive for a small shed. Probably as secure as it can be although determined thieves can overcome anything. My biggest gripe is that it takes hours to assemble and you must have as least one person assisting when you come to lift the heavy door/roof part which has to be carefully slid into place. There is no warning in any of the marketing material about this - there should be !!!

Not too sure about how thief-proof these things are. Take a look at this recent Times on-line article!

I purchased a Protectacycle at last years London Cycle Show (where it was a bit cheaper than £499). Took a couple of hours to assemble and bolt down but I am very impressed with the end result. I have my two competition racing bikes inside. This version is supplied with padlocks / cable / ground anchor etc, so bikes are secure even if thieves do get lid open (and they would make a large amount of noise in doing so). Don't buy the basic model as it is not much cheaper and you don't get all the security goodies. Only gripe is that you have to lift bikes over 8" front base to get in / out but it has better access than others I have seen. I agree with Bike Radar verdict - good design and peace of mind. Would recommend.

The bike box arrived faster than expected and I got to choose the delivery day I wanted. I have a little experience with flat packs and I have to say the instructions were great, the designers must have loved Lego as children as they contain mostly illustrations. You will need a helping hand to slide the door on, apart from that I had my bicycles locked away safety within 3 hours.

I have two adult bikes and my sons bike which easily fit when stacked head to tail. The door is maybe a little heavy for my son to lift without supervision but my wife has no problems opening and closing the box.

Attractive sturdy design. Exactly want I wanted!

A good secure product but this is reflected in the price.

As the Radar reviewer states "you get what you pay for."

Very pleased and would recommend the product but only really suitable for more expensive bikes.

9 out of 10 for product but 8 out of 10 overall as it is pricey.
