Cateye V2c: easy to use and install and almost interference-proof

BikeRadar verdict

45 out of 5 stars

"A fantastic system from the master of the cycle computer"

By Paul Smith

Cateye's V2 offers 2.4GHz fully wireless speed and cadence functions from a single chainstay-mounted sensor with an information-packed yet clearly readable display on the head unit.

The buttons are a little stiff, but have a good positive click and are usable with gloves despite their small size.

It’s a simple and quick process from mounting, set-up through to using.

Aside from logging data for later download, this has everything you could want from a computer for real everyday performance riding.

We tried all sorts to block the unit with interference, and only a JR 2.4GHz transmitter (for radio control helicopters) could cause the occasional stutter.

Not as great as all that.

I have had my Cateye V2C for 10 months now and have just had to send it back for repair because one of the tiny push buttons has quit working and I can no longer change screen. It comes with a two year guarantee so I anticipate repair or replacement with no problem, but this should not happen.

Although the product does everything it says on the box (until the failure mentioned above) I have been disappointed for the following reasons:

    - the display is too small - the third row of digits giving time and distance etc. is especially hard to read. Speed and cadence are OK.

    - the push buttons are ridiculously small and hard to manipulate. Forget it with winter gloves.

    - the cadence/speed transmitter uses up batteries very fast (3 sets now in only 3000 miles) and there is NO warning when it is about to fail: you find out the hard way

While waiting for the repair I have replaced it with an old Sigma Sport 800 from another bike. This is a wonderfully simple wired computer with a clear screen, large digits and big, easy buttons. The only reasons for keeping the Cateye are the cadence and the fact it takes the speeed reading off the rear wheel: great for use with a home trainer.

Given these reasons and the cost I'm not about to change it. I don't know if the competition is better but if you are looking to buy a bike computer in this category I would advise taking a good look around.
