The Adventurer 2800 comes preloaded with selected British National Parks on Ordnance Survey Landranger 1:50,000 maps, and with credit to download a further 10,000km2 of maps from the Memory Map website.
The touchscreen system is very easy to use, and the display updates quickly and clearly. The interface between the Memory Map software and the device is relatively simple, enabling you to upload and download routes and recorded data quickly and easily.
Although this is a traditional navigation system of a track drawn over a map that you follow until your next waypoint, there are plans to offer an in-car navigation-style system from Memory Map partner Snooper.
This would open up the device to almost any kind of navigation or logging you might want, making it similar to the Garmin Dakota, but quicker and with a higher resolution screen for less money.
Once we’d become used to the menu system, we got along just fine with the new Adventurer 2800 and, for the money, it’s difficult to find fault.
- Casing: Well sealed and tough. And despite its sealing, the speaker is still nice and loud.
- Display: Crisp and clear with a bright backlight, it also scrolls and zooms plenty quick enough.
- Buttons: There are two buttons – power and hold. Everything else is done via the touchscreen.
- Batteries: An internal lithium-ion battery gives an okay run time, but this device also works a treat used with external USB battery packs.
- MicroSD card slot: Memory cards up to 4GB in capacity are supported behind a sealed flap.
- Water resistance: It survived all our rain and jet-washing tests.

A good solid GPS, excellent OS based mapping software for the PC, excellent value for money when you consider the credit for the OS map and the OS based national park maps you also get with the GPS. Let down badly by a lack of manual especially if you are a GPS newbie

Great little GPS for the money, with memory map software on the PC it's fab and maps as above are great for road, MTB and hill walking. As an amazing deal too - for only £199.99 from tredz.co.uk - SUPER bargain!

Took me about a week to get the UK maps from my PC to the handset.... With several emails from memory map, and alot of trial and error... We are in!
This is a great bit of kit, OS 1:50000 and 1:25000 maps are unbeatable! This is the best device for navigating. It does not have all the cycling stats attached to the garmn 705, cadence, hr etc. But it a sat nav, it ticks all the boxes in the field!

Picks up satellites quickly and the reception is excellent under heavy tree cover or even in the car. Maps load almost instantly and there is virtually no lag when scrolling or zooming, the OS 1:25/50000 maps are perfect for off roading and all the national parks are covered. The unit itself seems rugged and durable, the touch screen is high res and larger than most, you can charge the unit in-car with a tomtom car charger & battery life is good. Very competitively priced + the OS map credits makes it good value for money.
My only niggles with it... the touchscreen... my girlfriend can just about operate it using only her hands but if i try the same the opposite of what I want to do happens... if you are a bloke with even medium sized hands you need to use the stylus.
The bike mount also needs rethinking... the cradle itself is sturdy right up to the point of the male connector, this'll snap off with one decent knock and if you use this for mtb'ing its going to happen at some point... the male connector on the cradle and the female connector on the handlebar are weak points. Another thing with the bike mount is that the kit is for one bike only... if you have more than one bike or share this with someone like i do then transferring between bikes meants cutting cable ties and re-mounting... not the end of the world but its a faff... the rubber "mat" and female connector that mount on the handlebars are not sold seperately so if you want hassle free transfer between bikes you need to buy a whole new kit!
All in a brilliant little GPS unit... having to use the stylus if you're bloke is not really a problem but the bike mount needs work!

Not sure how durable it is. I've used my 2800 now for 18 months and it no longer stays locked on to satellites as it did initially. Every few minutes it loses the signal and needs a sharp tap to bring it back. It is better on the bike than hand held when walking. Presumably the vibration keeps it 'tapped'. The maps do not go off, just the red circle. Loose antenna, seems likely.
I can seem to get little useful response from the Memory Map support team.
Given the price, if it only has an 18 month life, this is disappointing.
Incidentally, I bought a cycle bracket and extended battery at the same time. The bracket is fine with the basic unit, but nowhere near fits the unit with the extra battery.

Update. Memory Map have asked for the unit to be returned for repair, although the 12 month warranty has expired. Waiting to see what they are going to charge.
