Blackburn Design Neuro 4.0 Wireless Computer | $124.99
BikeRadar verdict
"Worth it if interference-free performance is vital"
The 4.0 is the entry level model in Blackburn’s 2008 Neuro computer range, offering reliable wireless performance in a simple-to-use package.
You get four lines of information on the screen so, for example, you can have your speed (in miles or km), average speed, ride time and cadence (pedal revolutions per minute) all shown at once, minimising the need to change between displays.
If you do want to swap to time of day, distance travelled or lap time (you can measure 50 laps on the stopwatch), the buttons are chunky enough to hit easily, even with gloved fingers.
Setting up the Neuro is a simple job with the speed and cadence sensors, which are linked by a short cable, zip-tied securely to your chainstay. You can clamp the head unit to either standard or oversized bars or attach a mount using the top cap of your headset for a position above your stem.
Just program in your wheel size from the list of pre-selected options or measure its circumference for greater accuracy, pair up the sensors with the computer and you’re away. You can also enter the details of a second wheel so it’s easy to swap the computer between a road bike and a mountain bike, without having to add the information every time.
The Neuro worked reliably on our maiden voyage across the bumpy cobbles of the Paris-Roubaix sportive and it has continued to do the business in all conditions ever since. The display is easy to read even on rough surfaces and the unusually high frequency of the transmission (2.4Ghz) means you get zero interference from power lines or cross talk from other bike computers.
A back light allows you to check out your performance while riding at night and you get weekly and annual ride hours recorded alongside details of your most recent session.
Spend more and the 5.0 (£99.99) comes with digital heart rate functions including training zones and memory, while the 6.0 (£119.99) has an altimeter that gives you the gradient you’re riding as well as the total amount of climbing you’ve done.

User review of Blackburn Design Neuro 4.0 Wireless Computer
I recently bought a 6.0 (from Ribble Cycles for a lot less than £120) and so far I'm quite pleased with it. I've only used it on an indoor trainer as I have a broken collar bone so I haven't been able to test the altitude function. Everything else works very well, though; It's easy to use with a clear display, simple fittings and pretty much all the features you might need. I'm docking a point because so far it's been impossible to get hold of a second bike fitting kit -- neither Blackburn themselves nor the UK importers, Madison, have one (suggestions much appreciated).

User review of Blackburn Design Neuro 4.0 Wireless Computer
I recently got a Neuro 4 intending to use it on 2 bikes since it's advertised with 2 bike settings. The fly in the ointment? You can't find a second speed/cadence transmitter anywhere. Contacting Blackburn customer service yields no help in locating one what so ever. The "product manager" says a kit is available but you can't buy one. Speaking with online retailers I found out (after the fact) Blackburn is somewhat notorious for not providing accessory kits for their computers. So if you wanted to use this computer on another bike you're out of luck.
Because of this, in spite of the fact that the computer does a good job (hence the 3 rating), I will never buy another Blackburn product again.

User review of Blackburn Design Neuro 4.0 Wireless Computer
After my August 25 posting I managed to find an online site that could get me a 2nd bike kit. They were more helpful than the Blackburn customer service reps apparently because they do quite a bit of business with Blackburn. They were given a kit part number and told that the 2nd bike kit would include the following:1 handlebar bracket, 1 stem mount, 1 crank & wheels magnet and 1 speed and cadence transmitter cable.
When I received the kit there was no bar bracket or stem mount. Upon my inquiry and the online retailer's follow up it was revealed to original information was wrong - no mounting hardware. It's interesting to note that with the kit I received there was one, red, rubber shim for the bar mounting bracket in the 2nd bike kit. It escapes me why this was included since there was nothing to use it with, i.e. a second bar bracket. It's almost as though whoever assembled the kit I received threw in some miscellaneous parts.
It's just another strong indication to me along with the misinformation the online retailer received and the frustration I sensed from the customer service people I communicated with there is something wrong inside Blackburn Design. Oh, yeah Blackburn missed their mid-September availability date too. As mentioned before I won't be buying any more of their products nor would I recommend them to my friends.

User review of Blackburn Design Neuro 4.0 Wireless Computer
Following up on my earlier review I've decided that, actually, this computer isn't so good. Like deskref I've found getting a second kit impossible and pretty much given up. Blackburn's customer support is dreadful -- sometimes they reply to emails after a few weeks, other times not. I was told several times that fitting kits (something advertised as a key selling point!) would be available imminently but that's clearly a lie. Even now, some 18 months after the Neuro range debuted I can't find a kit.
Furthermore, the unit has completely frozen up on me a couple of times and the cadence sensor often doesn't work. Some days it'll work riding to work then not on the way home, despite not altering its position or the position of the magnet. Very frustrating.
So, in summary: don't buy one, don't buy anything made by Blackburn, and tell anyone who'll listen not to buy anything made by Blackburn. In my experience their products are disappointing and their attitude towards customers is one of contempt.

User review of Blackburn Design Neuro 4.0 Wireless Computer
I have had this computer(the 4.0 neuro) for over a year. I like all of the functions that it offers. I really like the single mounting location for the cadence and speed sensor off the same rear stay point. It is a very clean mount. The screen layout is very is to see and to move through whatever display modes that I want to see while riding. I like the stem mount for the computer. I have only had one thing that I didn't care for with this computer. This is probably user error too. There are times when the computer goes into sleep mode and if I don't wake it up correctly I have to sync the sensors again. I now have a pattern that I follow to make sure that doesn't happen.
I am also on the hunt for the second bike mount kit. I called Blackburn and other than a long hold time they were helpful. Said the second bike kit is 45.00 and can be ordered from any blackburn dealer or from REI part number 2008976. I have also found it online although out of stock at both biketiresdirect.com. I got my computer on sale for 80 so it almost makes me want to just find a deal and buy a second neuro 4.0.

User review of Blackburn Design Neuro 4.0 Wireless Computer
The Blackburn Neuro 6.0 computer as all the functions you need it is easy to use and no problem getting the 2nd bike kit but, DO NOT BUY IT, it is unreliable freezes up when racing, and the 2nd bike kit is pointless as it only works occasionaly.
