Luu Premium 4 Cell Light

BikeRadar verdict

4 out of 5 stars

"Good performance but lacks the refinement of other systems"

By Paul Smith, Cycling Plus

With a Seoul P7 LED and four-cell Lithium Ion battery pack, the LUU was just short of the claimed 900 lumen output at a shade over 840, but that’s still easily bright enough for riding fast on unlit roads.

It comes with three diffusers that fit in front of the main lens enabling the beam pattern to be changed to narrow, medium or wide, though there isn’t really that much between them.

The lamp has three constant light settings (low, medium and high) and three flashing modes (fast, slow and low power). The illuminated blue switch is well sealed, and fits well against the main lamp body.

Our test light came with the additional AA battery holder which you simply screw onto the back of the main lamp body to use if your battery is flat or to turn it into a handy torch.

The run time of just over four hours on full power was impressive; better, though, was just over seven hours on medium power, which was more than enough for most riding needs.

your review seems at odds with the review of the nukeproof light in the mag. this is basically the exact same light just a different head design. the emitter ,battery and circuitry are the same yet this light performs amazingly compared to the nukeproof light. your claiming over an hours difference in run times and this light seems to be much brighter........ do you actually test these lights properly ? i think you need to seriously review the way you review things. alot of people are doubting the integrity of your reviews. firms with lots of advertising space in your mags seem to fare better. perhaps if hotlines took out full page ads instead of the narrow column style ads maybe they would garner more favourable reviews.

Great cheap light. Impressive as hell for the money. It's hard to do the clamp up tight enough, have resorted to using pliers to do this! Riding with this on the road is a balance between blinding people and being noticed - but you do REALLY get noticed. I graduated from a 4xAA cateye 5 LED light which I thought was pretty good a few years ago but this just blows it into the weeds. And when I think back to what we used to call lights in the 80s I wonder how we actually ever made it home... This would also make a great AUDAX light for roadies as the battery pack can get you through the last couple of hours of night on medium setting - or just buy another battery for £50. Nice that you can mix and match what you want off the website too. Another great deal from on-one planet-x.

Oh in that case, where did I put my card? Let's all snap them up and get one for each day of the week!

pastey_boy, the Luu costs £175 and got 4/5. The NukeProof costs £250 and got 3/5 in MBUK due in part to the poor run time and reduced value for money.

We've had a second Reactor on test here at BikeRadar which has given better run times, so when the review appears on the site you'll see the score has been upped to 3.5/5. That seems fair enough to me, considering that it costs £75 more.

The amount companies spend on advertising does not affect our reviews. In the edition of MBUK where the NukeProof received a less than glowing review, there was a full-page Nukeproof ad.

I've had one for a few months now and I'm slightly disappointed.

I agree with pastey_boy, the thumbscrew is hard to get properly tight in order to stop the lamp from pivoting up/down on its mount. Not great when you're going downhill at speed and the light points towards the sky, rendering you blind.

The connection at the back isn't as good as it could be - thre's a little bit of play and the lamps can sometimes flicker slightly.

The slide mount isn't very positive either. I've had the lamp slide of the mount a few times.

The optics are just plain crap. Oh, dont get me wrong - the light output is brutal but not very well directed. I have the medium and spot diffuser, and they do just that - diffuse, rather than focus. The spot has an annoying blind spot surrounded by a bright halo.

Mine came with a helment mount. The weight of the lamp unit makes it very uncomfortable as a helmet light. The mount is a waste of money - don't get it.

I have a Lumicycle battery connected to an Exergy 4W led mounted in a small aluminium cylinder (from eBay). The light is less focused but I prefer it to the LUU.

However, you do get a lot of light for your money in a pretty light package (the battery pack feels empty!). Check out eBay for other P7 variants (by Magic Shine) for around £65. I've not tried them, but they look worth a punt.

I still reckon the best lights for your money are by AYUP. My mates all have them but they stopped distributing in the UK by the time I wanted some :-(
