Ay Up V4 Adventure front light review

BikeRadar verdict
"Phenomenally bright, ultra-light and totally comprehensive helmet and bar lighting package"
Shopping partners
A massive 40 percent power increase has boosted Ay Up’s totally comprehensive lighting kits off the epic race circuit and right to the top of the trail light charts for 2012. The Adventure package's independently angle-adjustable twin head units and Half Epic battery are the same as the Ultra Lite set, but you get two.
While the beam shots look super-focused, using a spot helmet set and intermediate handlebar set gives an astonishingly bright double act that blows everything else off the trail and there’s a wide beam option if you want a full floodlight. Two minimalist zip tie bar mounts and Gecko helmet mounts mean immediate clip-in convenience for two bikes and helmets, which nocturnal solo or team racers and off road/ road riders will love.
Weight is tiny for their output and judging from what our three-year-old long-term sets have shrugged off they’re nigh-on indestructible. There are 12 anodised colour choices, plus rear light conversion covers and a car charger in the bean shaped case. Shipping from Australia is currently free too, leaving the short delivery wait as the only drawback.

Having just migrated from a Hope 4 (900 lumen) to these (400 lumen per light set) The Ay-ups are just gob smackingly small and light. The kit is so comprehensive that you have spares and not mentioned above, a quality headband to light the way in any sport you do.
The review by bike radar is 'on the nail' regarding being overpowered by brighter lights such as the Hope 4.
But..remember this...
Brighter lights do overpower your rider compainions. If you are behind with a brighter light, your light casts a deep shadow in front of the bike/rider in front plus you get really bright reflections of the clothing and bike off the rider in front.
In front of the pack or on your own, the lights produce more than enough and because they 'project the light' the lights reach further down the trail than say, the Hope 4. They are brighter than just the lumen count suggests. Cars still dip their lights or pull over!
Because the Ay-Ups are run at 7.4v and not overvolted (this results in the cool running and seriously long run times) the light cast in front is softer - no stupidly bright reflection and vastly reduced shadowing. This makes your ride more comfortable and produces less moaning from your mates.
Add in the fact that you can ride for 3+ hours, these light are well worth the money.
Of course you could just stick with a 1000+ lumen monster to ride on your own, or worse...in front of your mates all the time...

Good review from Monst. I use AY UPs and think they are great but now I have an Exposure Diablo with piggyback battery which kicks their butt. The Exposure has an easy to operate, with gloves on, 3 settings system plus flash so there is no need to cast a big shadow from behind your mates and you can turn them up when your at the front or on your own. You'll get 5-6 ish hours on medium with piggyback which is still brighter than a set of AY UPs and you can blast out 900 lumens at the press of a button.

Just went for my first ride with these, are for the money, they are a cracking set of lights.
Lightweight, run cool, and tremendously bright! Both my mates had Exposure lights (one a Toro and the other a Maxx D so not top end mind you) and they both commented how bright they where; especially the focused beam for the head lamp.
Very, very happy with my purchase.

Why are the back of the grips lit up in the photo?

@Upsidedownbiker
Probably by the light set on the photographer's helmet. This review is for the two light set - one on the bars and one on the helmet.

As these lights are bought directly from the makers in Australia, am i right in thinking that import duty & taxes will be due on arrival in the UK?
If so, people should be aware that the cost of this package will be around £55 more then stated in this article.
