Lupine Betty 6 Light

BikeRadar verdict

45 out of 5 stars

"Stunningly bright illumination and great extras — at a high price..."

By Guy Kesteven

The latest über-LED from German light specialist Lupine is the brightest and smartest LED light by far. We're talking incredible light output and run times for total night ride domination. There's also an excellent charger, remote switch versatility and included extras but we have to ask if you can have too much light.

The seven LEDs incorporated into the Betty 6 pump out a massive 50 percent more power than any other LED front light we've tested. Everything ahead of your handlebars will be bathed in stark bluey-white light.

It’ll still run full bore for over three hours, though, and you can toggle light levels in incremental steps via the PCS programmable remote control switch.

We rarely used the Betty at full power because of dazzling glare and bounce-back off anything damp. The massive amount of contrast also seemed to tire our eyes quicker than the warmer Hope Vision light, even at lower settings.

While the LEDs used here are certainly better than the old HIDs, we’ve also seen and heard of more reliability problems with the Lupine than the Light and Motion and Hope lights.

The remote switch also shows the remaining battery life via an LED traffic light, and the LCD-screened Charger One charger gives charging status information, too.

The metal head uses a simple O-ring and hook mount, which is impressively secure if you stretch it tight enough.

The battery sits in a little black bag with a wrapover flap and retaining strap that’ll sit under medium-long stems or top tubes.

Extension lead and helmet mount (you’ll need a strong neck to support the 160g head) are included, as are waterproofing grease, a car adaptor and a carry bag, which all help to justify the high price.

If you want the ultimate in lighting power and night-fighting features, and cost is no problem, this is the one to buy.

Bought my Betty 12 for £595 from Swinnerton Cycles had seven 20 mile off road night rides with it. Being just over 60 and having poor night vision safety is obviously a concern I have tried all the various combinations and settled for the 13 and 22 watt settings rarely using the 22 watt only for very badly rutted and potholed sections of the ride no problems so far. except for masses of leaves covering them I can see quite well with the nine watt setting but like the extra light. Charging is a doddle Plug it in and leave it for about 8 hours for a flat one even if you forget it won't matter as it puts it on trickle charge, it would have been nice to have a 4 program setting to cover 5 9 13 & 22 watt settings 5 being for the road maybe that will happen at a later date. With my flask of home made soup & Betty 12 and a good night peddle I'm a happy man
