Ay Up 08 MTB Lightset | $465
BikeRadar verdict
"Bit low on power but a massively comprehensive kit for epic racers"
This comprehensive tiny light set-up is ideal for solo racers or less technical all-night epics.
Ay-Up offer the ultimate lighting buffet, letting you choose from a dozen anodised colours and narrow or intermediate beams for the two tiny twin LED lamps’ units. They’re mounted on ziptie secured helmet and bar mounts, and give a perfectly workable amount of light for all but the fastest or trickiest trails.
With one large and two smaller battery packs, you’ve got enough power for half a day, or you can just run one for a lightweight race set-up. Spare mounts, extension leads, smart battery charger and even an in-car charger are included. They’re not as powerful as similarly priced options though.

With one large and two smaller battery packs, you’ve enough power for half a day - or you can just run one for a lightweight race setup.
The main battery pack burns for six hours or so on full beam, then fades slowly over about nine hours. The two smaller battery packs burn for about three hours each on full beam plus the same slow fade, so you should never get stranded without illumination.
Spare mounts, extension leads, smart battery charger and even an in-car charger are included. If you genuinely need loads of burn time, these are the lights for you.
They’re not as powerful as similarly priced options though, and the zip-tie bar and helmet fittings will irritate some riders.
The ‘Roadie’ pack, which is £100 cheaper, may be a better option for some, with its single six-hour battery and dual beam light unit.

That's good to know about the "slow fade", I have never pushed mine beyond three hours but they stayed sharp and bright all that time. The ones I have are around 280 lumens each (560 combined), which is more than enough for pitch black off-road.
I also believe that Ay-Up have recently introduced a new style helmet mount, so no more zip ties required for that.
However, one thing not mentioned is that both the lights and lithium polymer batteries are so small and lightweight that there is really no problem leaving them permanently strapped to your helmet, you really hardly know they are there. Honest, the size and weight will astonish you. And personally I like the no-fills approach because it makes these things pretty well bombproof and there is less to go wrong.
You also have a choice of beam pattern when you order the lights, and the choice of colours (for the light bodies) is excellent.
Final word, I had need to replace a battery under warranty and the guys at Ay-Up couldn't have been more helpful, the replacement battery arrived less than a week later and I didn't even have to wait until they had received the old one back.
Yeah, I know this reads like an advert, but take it from me that after just over 12 months I still absolutely love these things and cannot think of a bad word to say about them.

"bit low on power" I have not found that. They are more than powerful. The last review i saw game the 6hr battery a burn time of 10hrs!!! and the 3hr battery 4.5hrs.
The kit you get with the MTB is awesome, two bar mounts makes life much easier.
I moved to Ay-Up's from Lumicycle and i will not be changing any time soon.
The helmet mount could do with some modification, i shall check mount mentioned in the previous review.
All in all i am very happy!!

Like Dilker I have to dispute the 'bit low on power' comment as I have also not found this, these are superb lights, very bright with superb battery run times.
I haven't had any problems with either the helmet or handlebar mounts and I actually like the security of the zip tie system.
I wouldn't change them for any other lights and for what you get in the pack they're worth every penny.

I recently got these lights (went for the MTB kit) and am very impressed. Lot of bang for your buck here.

I bought the MTB Pack and love these bad boys!
They are the business in action and beautifully made, including the neoprene wrap packs for each component part which makes up the set.
Easy to use on the bars and helmet, long lasting, very bright light for your night time off rode riding.
Best value for money lights I could find and I would not change them for anything else!

I have the roadie kit but I recently used it for a long night-time off-road ride in filthy conditions. The lights were great - very bright and I can't imagine how then can be seen as low on power! On the road cars coming towards me tend to stop wondering what's coming towards them!
I had a problem with the charging unit which Ay-Up! sorted out super-fast (so thanks Ay-Up).
The kit is so small, light and easy to fit that I use it on my Brompton around the City.
I wish I'd spent the extra £100 to get the off-road kit which offers good value.
Wonderfully built, absolutely water-proof and a joy to use.

Never written a review on here before and, until recently, had always used Lumicycles. My wife has just started commuting and needed some lights. Lumicycles looked expensive and these seemed a good deal. Having got them for her I've tried them and they're excellent. She had been using the Lumicycles but now prefers these (which is a bit of a shame as I was going to let her have the Lumicycles and I was going to keep the Ayups!).
They arrived next day and so far, with the limited time of ownership that we've had, I can't fault them at all.

These are great little lights. Not found they're low on power at all.
Been out for 3 hours + and the smaller batteries were still burning brightly and happily when I got back.
My only snag is the zip tie mounts, which have been changed.

I purchased these lights earlier in the summer. I've been using a spot on the helmet and a wide on the bars. I used them to success to win The Hardcore 24; 24 hour solo race. They are super light, get loads of runtime and plenty bright. I use them all the time for night riding and they work flawless

Another big vote for these lights. I originally bought the roadie set to use on the bars (with an intermediate beam) to suplemnent the Exposure Joystick Maxx on my helmet. Note that these two lights cost the same, except the AyUps have at least twice the run time (2 x 3hr+ batteries)
My first nightide out and it was immediately obvious that the Exposure Joystick was simply not up to the job in comparison to the AyUps. The Joystick is a good light, but was simply invisible next to the light from the AyUps.
The long and the short of it is the Joystick is going on eBay, and I've ugraded to the MTB set - whcih works brilliantly. Massively recommended, I'm absolutely stoked by the power, duration, accessories and customer service of these lights.

Only if you have been spoilt by having free access to stupid lumen power lights would you consider them to be low on power (you know who you are). I've been more than happy with them.
There are more powerful lights out there, but once you've got to 'powerful enough' there are other things you should be looking for. They are well made, tiny, very light, massive burn time and simple. I use the roadie kit and find them easily bright enough for 25mph+ riding on pitch black country roads, and cars now dip their headlights :-) About to add a narrow beam helmet spot for some trail riding.
Add in a 10 year guarantee for the light units, free crash damage replacement and (so far) excellent service, I don't see how you can go wrong.

Here is info on the new GECKO helmet mounts for lights and batteries. They are not shown on the UK part of the website yet, but AY-UP wrote to me about them so they should be available to UK customers if you ask......

I have to agree with most of the above, these lights are simply awesome considering what they cost. Got mine last year for £140 before the pound went belly up and they have been great.
Quite frankly i find the prices of some of the lights available ridiculous, and i can honestly say that i'm on the edge coming down Innerleithen and glentress on our night time blasts with these, so cant imagine how paying 600-700 quid on a light would make it any more enjoyable!
