Rugged lock point for your bikes, but Kryptonite's similar offering is considerably cheaper

Abus's WBA ground anchor certainly looks rugged, and extra peace of mind comes from the fact that it has achieved Sold Secure's gold rating.

Approval from this testing programme, administered by the Master Locksmiths Association, means it cannot be broken using the tools an average thief carries.

And you can see why – it features a corrosion resistant 16mm-thick hardened steel shackle which fixes to the ground with four chunky expander bolts.

As with all anchors of this type, it takes a while to fit and you'll need to invest in some pretty serious drill bits. But it can be fitted indoors or outdoors, and the shackle can be laid flat when not in use.

The Abus's most obvious rival is the Kryptonite Stronghold anchor, which has a similar design but fixes with three bolts rather than four and is £25 cheaper.

When we fitted them both we found that the Stronghold actually clamped closer to the ground, making it harder for thieves to get a lever underneath. But the Abus wasn't loose enough for it to be a major concern.

The Abus has a wider shackle – good if you want to pass multiple locks through it; bad if you only plan to use one lock, because there's more room for thieves to insert levers/bolt croppers/etc. It doesn't come with drill bits like the Kryptonite.
