Abus Steeloflex Granit 1000
BikeRadar verdict
"One of the best cables you can buy "
Simply put, anyone out there looking to make a cable lock that works should take a close look at the Steeloflex.
This has a tough, armoured steel lock mechanism with folded and overlapped individual links that are over 5mm thick. It also comes with a proven key replacement service (72hrs). We've heard of a London courier who locked the Steeloflex around his waist and lost the keys, and decided he'd rather spend the next 72 hours wearing it than have the lock cut off! The Steeloflex passed our five-minute first round with minimal cosmetic damage and in test two our high-powered tool took over a minute and a half to get through this super-tough lock. This is one of the best cables you can buy.

Machine Mart cable cutters £30, 40 seconds, job done. End of.
Cables should be banned as security items, they serve little purpose.

Insurance rated and flexible enough to use where D-locks won't fit.

I would like to see £30 cable cutters bite through this, honestly. It's over an inch thick and tougher than a regular steel of the same width. (hardened)
It is incredibly tough (read some test reports) and holds out against an angle grinder (which you need for locks in this category) longer than most D-locks as the links are designed to be twistable to minimise the ability to grind.
Top lock.
In practical use it offers much more flexibility over a D-lock as to where you can lock it - i..e. it will wrap around a beefy tree more easily - at only marginally less protection.
It's Gold rated, too.

philm94, there is a video on YouTube of an Abus Steel-o-flex getting cut with standard bolt cutters in a few seconds - google for "abus chopped" and you will find it - I'm not sure of the exact model, so I would like to see one of the high end Abus steel-o-flexes cut to see if there's any real difference. The cable is not really an inch thick since the steel shells it is made of are hollow. There is also a video (linked to from the Wikipedia article on bicycle locks) of a Dutch guy who cuts an Abus armoured cable lock in a few seconds by stretching it with his cutters to expose the bare cable inside.

Bought this lock last year, managed to snap the key first time I used it. Called a locksmith out who went through it in about 30 seconds with a normal angle grinder.
Tried to get a new lock on warranty from Wiggle where I bought it, but the warranty only covered the lock, not the key...
Get a kryptonite mini D instead, small and handy, and works most places
