Deuter Trans Alpine 30
BikeRadar verdict
"Perfect off the bike, or for epic rides and those who like a larger pack stuffed with features"
With its cavernous 30-litre capacity, you’ll have no trouble fitting everything you need for epic days out into Deuter’s new pack.
An internal zip separates the main compartment, creating a smaller section that can also be accessed externally – handy for quick access to tools or stashing wet gear. There are two smaller pockets as well. Two side mesh pockets are ideal for water bottles or food on the go, and there are also nifty mesh zippered pockets in the waist strap.
The pack is hydration compatible and can hold a large bladder. You’ll have to buy this separately, but the price of the bag is very reasonable, so it’s still great value. The piggy-backed elastic helmet carrier is great. Its wide range of adjustment can carry anything from your XC lid to a full face bruiser, or you can stash your pads for the trip to the top of the hill.
Build quality is tough and the Air Stripe back panels provide decent airflow and plush comfort. The main straps are adjustable for a great fit and the well-designed clasps hold everything in place. There’s even a rain cover built in, although it’s very bright!
This is a big, heavy bag but it will swallow pretty much everything without a burp of complaint. There are plenty of options to help keep the load packed stable – side compression straps squash the bag down, while the front retention system will take helmets or jackets in equal ease.
The back system works as well as anything could do with 30 litres of kit hanging off it, holding the bulky mass still and steady over the roughest ground, and the wide hip belt puts weight in the right place.

User review of Deuter Trans Alpine 30
I have used this for commuting for the past year instead of panniers, and it's great. It's cavernous as mentioned, and if you decide not to put a hydration bladder in it the area designated for it makes a great laptop holder. It's tough as well - nothing's ripped, torn or frayed and the zips and mesh are in good nick. If I've got one criticism, it's that there's not much in the way of reflective on it so visibility isn't great, but the rain cover is plenty bright so you can always put that on if you're feeling particularly paranoid!

It's a big bike (I mean "big" for on bike use) with lots of pockets (maybe too much !!!)
The back is very comfortable, but a little long (I also own the 25 ltr version which has a notably shorter back).
The belt, with two small pockets, cannot be removed.
The helmet carrier is very versatile; I manage to carry two shoe boxes with the 25 ltr bag (one in the bag and the other attached using the helmet carrier).
Like AIdanR, I find that Deuter is a little mean with reflective patches, so I add reflective stickers on both the bag and its yellow rain cover.
