Giant Shadow Dry panniers £120

Waterproof luggage

BikeRadar score 3/5

These roll-top waterproof panniers do a good job of keeping the water out and have a collection of additional features that make them more than a simple luggage container. With a 32-litre capacity, there’s room for a weekend’s worth of gear or plenty of shopping, but you’ll need to look at 40-litre or larger panniers if you’re the ‘kitchen sink’ touring type.

The zipped pockets inside the lid are handy for keys and a wallet, the reflective trim boosts visibility, and the shock cord on the top provides a useful place to carry a jacket. The bags mount on your rack via a pair of plastic-coated hooks and a shock cord. We’d expect a more secure and convenient system – such as a Rixen-Kaul fitment or Ortlieb’s QL attachment – at this price.

Nevertheless it didn’t budge, despite being bounced over potholed lanes. The main compartment is held closed by straps that flap in the wheel if the bag is rolled right down, and they need a retention loop to keep them under control – we resorted to a couple of rubber bands.
