Vaude Discover Back review

While most watertight panniers use ultra high-frequency welding, Vaude's new Ultra Seam Tech allows different fabrics to be used, rounded shapes to be created and weight savings too. The proof of the pudding is the minimal Discover back, a rear pannier set weighing just 1,640g for £70.

Great price and quality in a lightweight package

While most watertight panniers use ultra high-frequency welding, Vaude's new Ultra Seam Tech allows different fabrics to be used, rounded shapes to be created and weight savings too.

The proof of the pudding is the minimal Discover back, a rear pannier set weighing just 1,640g for £70. The shape is tapered on both sides, so it's universal. Material has proved very durable so far though its thinness does mean it's a bit floppy and not as easy to pack as some. It's fiddlier to close than Ortlieb's system, as you have to buckle the lid down on the sides - but very secure once shut. Internally, there's a pocket flap with two roomy compartments. The back plate is the toughest on test, with plenty of adjustability using an Allen key. The clips feature inserts - with them, fit is tight on a 10mm rack. There are good reflectors and overall quality is excellent.
