Crud Catcher front mudguard review

BikeRadar verdict
"A classic mud catcher that offers great value and good coverage"
Shopping partners
The Crud Catcher was a landmark product for mountain biking in the UK and is now in its ninth iteration, and at a very reasonable price too.
The classic catcher attaches easily to your down tube with a pair of rubber O-rings. However, some frames’ down tubes don’t match up that well with the three mounting points, so it can be tricky to fix it on tight enough.
The dual-shot moulding means you get a soft rubber around the top edge, but it’s difficult to get the guard right up close to the fork crown, so some mud flicks through. There’s a small Crud logo in soft rubber on the outside to sit against your down tube and stop it rubbing.

Why would anyone want a mudguard that doesn't move with the wheel ... it can't protect very much ... pointless IMHO ... but people do buy these ...

When the wheel is pointing away from straight ahead, then the mud will go to the side of you, so you don't necessarily need it to move with the wheel. I have one of these on my bike all the time, as they don't get in the way when you don't need them like other guards can do, especially if you are transporting the bikes without the front wheel on.

The problem with these types of mudguard is they don't stop the wet stuff being flicked up into the air and hitting you in the face. Suspension mounted ones are the best. You don't see a motorcross bike without one do you?

I switched from this to the Cycraguard one which is much better - Its wider without being obstructive and a more snug fit right up behind the fork crown so catches more muck.

Have to disagree here I ran a "the" motocross style mud guard for years but switched to the Crud catcher with a home made NeoGuard (zip tied inner tube between the fork crown and lower's bridge) when I built up my Trailstar with 130mm Revelations. This solution is much simpler and more effective (less mudpox at the end of the ride), plus its much easier to squeeze the bike into the car without the motocross mud guard flapping around and getting crushed or shut in the door.
We have switched my wife, kids and a number of serious MTB riding friends over and they all feel the same.
