"Lacks top-end resistance but is reasonably smooth, stable and quiet at a good price"

Giant have expanded their 2012 turbo range to include fluid trainers, but this simple magnetic unit is still a decent value option for riders who want a less strenuous workout.

There are a couple of bolts to insert but the double-sided axle clamp has a quick-closure lever – it grips securely and the whole unit is reassuringly stable. The soft urethane roller feels lumpy and rumbles at lower speeds, and there’s some slipping when you start sprinting. The noise levels and feel aren’t too bad once you’re spinning fast though.

That’s what you’re likely to be doing for a lot of the time too – there’s little difference between each of the seven steps of resistance from the remote on the bars. The top level is easy to rev out if you’re on a compact chainset, and even with full-sized rings it doesn’t fight much out of the saddle.
