"Not posh but fully featured single trailer. But on a budget, who needs more? And what a price"

As with all the trailers in this test, with the Bumper you get a hitching point that you can leave on the bike, clamped in place on the rear dropout by the skewer, and a fully articulating joint on the end of the towing arm which means that even if you and your bike fall over, the trailer will stay upright.

The ride is not the smoothest, as the only suspension your little one will enjoy is from the air in the 1.75in tyres on the 16in wheels and the give in the stretcher seat – the tautness of which can be adjusted with straps depending on the weight of your child.

Inside, there's a five-point harness with height-adjustable shoulder straps for growing babies and a nicely padded gusset to keep the little one from wriggling down the trailer. You also get two drink bottle holders, a rear-opening meshed vent behind the child's head, fold up fly screen and windscreen, high visibility reflective strips all round and, of course, a safety flag. There is a decent shopping-bag sized open pocket on the back of the trailer too.

The transition from trailer to stroller is quick and easy – unhitch, move trolley wheel from its handy storage fixing place on the towing arm to the centre of the bumper, unclip and swivel the hinged towing arm underneath the trailer and reclip, then unfold and retighten the stroller handle at a comfortable height. And stroll… Just don't forget to lock up your bike properly in all the excitement.

For storage or transport, with the unclipping of one safety catch the Bumper will fold down into a suitcase sized oblong roughly 2ft square and then fit in any reasonable car boot – even with the wheels still on. Weak back? Don't worry – because even though it's made out of fairly robust steel and sturdy nuts and bolts, being only a single makes the Bumper no heavier than a decent sized pushchair.

What's more, if you do leave the wheels on, there's nothing to take off before or after folding – apart from your shopping, and of course your child…

Two kids or twins? The Bumper Explorer Duo is just £139.99, which also includes the handle and stroller wheel. What a bargain!

  • Its the bumper duo I bought, expect its much the same as solo except a bit wider.

So far Im very pleased with this bargain trailer.

Good Points, folds easy and is relatively flat and small when folded, I have a honda civivc and it will lay flat in boot. Its easy to put together. Its suprisingly light for a steel carrier. The ride is good, unlike the reviewers, they come with 20 inch wheels now making ride smoother. Its dead easy to push about in stroller mode, though the duo being wider would not be much use going round the shops, though still narrower than a double buggy!

Another thing I like is the fabric is nice and taught when its folded out, no flappy sides etc!

Bad points, Good sized luggage bay at back, but its open to the elements! Im not planning on taking her out in the rain anyway, so does not bother me, fair weather only if Im taking the wee one out! My wee girl is only 10 months and the padded gusset strap is way too big to hold her upright and does not adjust, so what i did was roll it up and used plastic tie grips to make it shorter, she was fine then. The back of trailer does say not for under 18 months, but where is the fun in that. The seat is a bit upright for sleeping so the other thing I do I fit the top of my quinny pushair into the trailer using all the straps. This means she is slightly more laid back for sleeping comfortably. I have used a top range burley and had the exact same problem with seat straps being to big, they are just not made for really small kids. There is a company in germany (weber) that do inserts for trailers for babys and infants.

All in all I would recommend, for the price its a real good buy and miles better and lighter than other cheap trailers that I have seen.

  • In total contrast to both the above we found the Bumper to be a very disappointing purchase.

It is true the trailer folds flat, it is also only held up with one clip on one side and there is no securing latch or pin. Thus if it is knocked (it within reach of little fingers) or jolted or worn, it will fold up again, occupants and all. The wheel axle shafts were very poorly made, the shaft being too big thus giving over 15mm of movement at the tyre. We approached the shop and they said these were both normal for the product. We also found that while the load capacity was good compared to other trailers, this unit was very narrow. Our 3 yr old and 1.5yr old looked cramped and it was short in the legs for the 3 year old. A further issue was the front cover which did not properly extend over the side rails, thus the inside was not draft sealed and certainly not water sealed for the children, the wind would have pushed the edges open. The pushing handle adjusting bracket was made of plastic and did not seem very robust and the buggy wheel was fixed through a hole drilled in the frame creating a weak point.

We would not recomend this trailer. We've now put in the extra and gone for the Croozer Kid 2 which is brilliant, having none of the issues listed above (and worth more than the 4 stars given by Bikeradar.

  • we recently bought one of these ,ease of use is excellent they have changed the front wheel design ,and now there are two clips ,but a massive but we where caught out in the rain today and both our children ended up sat in puddles !!

def not impressed with that feature

  • bought the duo version of this last year... as soon as my son was born.

three months old and his recaro car seat was fixed securely into his trailer with loads of cable ties and straps and we went for a little (very gently) roll down some smooth woodland cycle path... since then he has loved every minute!!! once he was over 6months and able to properly keep his body upright i had to alter the built in seatbelts as they are way to loose and don't hold the child in the right position. as someone else said the gusset of the belt is way to low as it only starts at the outer edge of the seat.

i only ever took him on tow paths and off road as i dont belive in towing my child along roads where cars are likley... Not worth the risk in my opinion!!

im only selling it now as he's 15 moths old and already onto his balance bike!!!

Absolutely brilliant!!! and very light... Mine is all aluminium though (noticed alot seem to be steel?)
